So I have progressed the restoration. After two undercoats and filling rust pits, I was able to put the first topcoat one the stand.





Hopefully if the paint drys I will be able to get a second coat on mid week.

I did a colour match on my hyco bandsaw (unrestored with original paint).
I'm using rust guard, however it's turned out a little bit darker than the original colour.

I'm finding out about my inexperience with enamel paint. With the cold weather, the second top coat has not fully dried after a week. It has developed a couple wrinkles too. I will sand back once it sets and repainted once the warmer weather returns.

Yes, that is a trap with the White Knight Rust Guard. It can be pretty thick in the tin and difficult to avoid excessive film thicknesses when brushed. In winter, when the paint is cold and thick, I usually dilute maybe 10% with the recommended enamel thinner or just with turps. This helps get a thinner layer per coat, and helps with faster drying time. Even so, I will try and plan things to leave much more than 1 week between coats. If you dilute the paint, you need to be more careful to avoid runs.

To add more detail: I've had two issues with brushing this paint, the first has been the paint getting too think per coat, particularly on inside corners, and the paint wrinkles as it dries. The second problem has been not leaving enough time between coats and the first coat wrinkles when the second coat is applied.

Of course, application by spraying helps here because the film thickness can be held to a minimum more easily, but the down side is that it takes more coats to get the final paint thickness up. I usually brush 2 coats (with preferably many weeks between coats) but if spraying I'll do 3 or 4 coats, but with only days between coats. So both methods take about the same total time. I brush mostly, partly because it's more authentic for older machinery, and partly because I need to spray outdoors so I need to wait for good weather to do that (dry and not windy).

Getting the part out in the sun, even in winter and for a few hours only, will really help with the drying. Can you do that?

I missed your earlier post showing the colour match. If the dark green is what you're using it seems to be way off the colour on the rest of that piece. But the dark green looks OK for a saw colour to me, in fact it's very close to what I used on my tilting table Hyco.

now that I will be redoing some of the paint and have accumulated a number of hyco machines to restore, I will take the opportunity to re match the paint and get it as close to original colour as possible.

Thanks for the paint advice ! I will be more patient in future and experiment with thinners, make sure I paint in the morning and leave in the sun for the day before storing in the shed.

so I have not stopped being productive, I have just shifted my focus away from my bench saw to focus on my Hyco combo sander. I have all but finished it and just have to get a mobile based and wire up to the motor. It has taken longer than hoped because a spent too much time trying to match the paint with the multiple hyco machines I have (they are all different).

I hope you enjoy the photos and i will jumping back to the the bench saw, now this one is finished.

Your progress is making me feel guilty. Life has recently got in the way of machine restorations for me, I really need to get back to it.

Looks Great Stew.... Love the colour... was that mixed for you or is it a stock colour? If you ever run into another one of these let me know ..... I am imagining one of these in my shop

Gaza I went with the closest stock colour I could find, Dulux “ Little Mermaid B”. The person who makes up the names for paint colours must have the best job 🤪I will keep my eye out for another one! Cheers stew
