Hi all.

When you live in Wellington, earthquakes are a fact of life. I probably feel two or three quakes - in the 3 or 4 range - every year.

Got woken up just after midnight by the first quake to scare me for a very long time. I couldn't tell when it finally finished because I was shaking at a similar frequency

.

I went back to bed at 1.30am as I had to get up at 4.15 to start a shift at 5.30 (which fortunately was cancelled). About 2.30am BIL, two nephews, FIL and his neighbours arrived - refugees, as a tsunami warning had been issued and they’re on flat land near the harbour. We're on a hill.

Anyway, to keep on topic, I'm pleased to advise no OWWM was harmed - all my machines are still upright. In fact, several spanners on the bed of my woodlathe didn't even fall onto the floor.

Even as I type this there's a beaut aftershock.

Tonight we're expecting rain and 140kph winds. That'll cause more damage, as rain get blown a metre into the garage through cracks in the door. I hate rust

Glad you are O.K. I hope all our WWF friends in New Zealand have not suffered any damage or injuries in this mornings earthquake.

Stay safe! Was just watching the news, lots of shaking going on over there, some of those aftershocks alone would be pretty scary. Back in 89, Newcastle had a 5.6 quake, and I remember it well as I was in the middle of the bush watching the eucalypts swaying (often called widowmakers due to their tendency to shed large branches to save water). Friends with me were blissfully unaware of the danger, so they really enjoyed the experience, I did not.

Hope things settle down and those aftershocks don't do any more damage and everyone stays safe, so sad to hear about the two lost lives.

Waking during an earthquake would be a frightening experience Vann.
And with the past damage and loss I bet it would be a worry as well .

On second thoughts.
I guess you're in no screaming hurry for it and I haven't found an appropriate sized box yet so I might give it a week for things to settle down over there if that's ok.

Not just the road. I was intrigued by the pikkie of the rail line that had been pulled off the embankment, across the road, and onto the beach by the slip - and hadn't broken (it looked pretty tight - I'll bet you could play a note on those tight strings).

Ironically, we were completely unaffected by the quakes (other than a good shaking and a day at home). But today I got stranded at Paekakariki (about 50km from home) when rain caused slips and flooding and closed all roads and rail links out of the town. The boss offerred a motel, but I wanted to get home to the family. My workmate and I walked 1 1/2 hours in the rain, to the next town (which was also isolated), past road blocks (I don't know how we got past the police without being stopped). Then we hitched a ride in a 4WD down a back road that had slips in many places. Finally got back to work (10 minutes after knock-off time) and caught the only train that made it out of Wellington to Petone for hours (between floods and aftershocks).

I'm now home and dry, and safe.

And SWMBO is pleased I made it home (should I take advantage of this situation and buy another machine

).

I've found that when I return from a business trip is usually a good time to raise the subject of a new purchase.
