She's a well used and well abused machine. I wonder if the problem is in the pivots - but I won't be taking it apart anytime soon to find out.

Well this is a bit interesting ... I had the same issue with my 45º tilt mechanism before I pulled it all apart. From memory I could get it to about 60º and then it got that seized I couldn't to go any further. I couldn't see anything that would cause this TBH. When I pulled it apart there was some built up gummed up saw dust but couldn't be sure this was the cause. Once it's all assembled I'll let you know if it's all kosher.
