    Default Wadkin RS headstock question

Got my newly acquired (1953) lathe running but the bearings are noisy.
I though of removing the shaft and cleaning them and refitting if OK otherwise replacing them.
I cannot get the locking nut off it is so tight. Made a spanner to fit over the nut but no joy.
I presume and looking at the shaft it is a right hand thread.
Any suggestions before I break something.
    Thanks
    Phil

I'm in Saskatoon playing on a Oneway lathe currently so can't have a look at mine to help you out.
But if you do a search on the Canadian Woodworking forum you will find a report on a rebuild of an RS, probably from Wallace a UK Wadkin user.

I have searched most of the forums for info and read the one by Wallace. No definite info though. Lots of pics missing in most threads.
Photobucket should change the 'b' in their name to 'f'.
Will keep at it and get it right.

Well got the nut off this morning. A lot of butchering so will make a new one.
    It is right hand thread.
The shaft and bearings came out easily.
The inboard bearing is badly pitted and the outboard has marks but not as bad.
They will have to be replaced but am not looking forward to what they will cost.
While all is apart am going to get a spliced belt made up.

    For reference:
    Machine - RS 1412
    Inboard brg - LS 13 1/2 - FBC England - deep groove
    Outboard brg - ULS 13 1/2 - Hoffman England - self aligning.
