Advice re: repainting old plywood
Hello all,
i am about to repaint my fathers plywood Hartley boat and am after some advice regarding paint prep.
On some areas of the ply (which Dad always just painted with oil based enamel) the paint has split with age/sun exposure along the lines of the grain.
I have attached an image showing this on an area of ply where there is a knot as it makes it much more obvious.

Can someone please advise what i should use to prep the ply after sanding the old paint back?
Is there a sealer type product that would be good to use which would seal up the ply surface before repainting?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Gary
PS: This is a budget project to keep the family boat afloat for a bit longer. We don't have the money to use expensive marine paints and that would detract from keeping her as Dad had her for many years.

I'd suggest that the best sealer you could use on the ply would be marine epoxy...thin it down and paint on a few coats, then topcoat with your preferred paint. That'll help they ply hold together for a few more years.

Even better would be to sand the whole thing back and seal with epoxy rather than just patches.

Your local marine shop, or failing that, ebay, or http://boatcraft.com.au/informationp...ctoverview.htm

A lot depends on the species used in the plywood, as some tend to develop checks and cracks (meranti and Douglas fir, for example) with movement and age, so epoxy alone wouldn't solve anything. Personally, I think you're best advised to simply sand down the area(s) you're concerned with, possibly filling in the depressions if necessary and repainting. You might want to bulk up paint in the affected areas first, then smooth and fair into surrounding areas, before painting the whole thing. This is a much simplier and cheaper route for this type of repair too, as epoxy is expensive in small quantities.

Thank you PAR,
This old girl was built to a very small budget. Dad used to use as much recycled timber as possible for his boats. The ply however was purchased new but was basic inexpensive plywood, I am pretty sure the outer layer is just pine.
i will start the sanding soon and might just decide what to do once I get the old paint off and see what I'm working with.
might put a few pics up here when I get it sanded back
