Not a boat but
I am planning to build a woodie similar to the one in the picture that I have (hopefully) attached. I would like some advice as to whether I need to use marine plywood or not. As the vehicle will not be exposed to water as much as a boat I was wondering if "ordinary" ply would suffice if given a good coat of varnish.
I know this is not a boat but I did not know where else on this forum to post my question.

Since you are unlikely to drown if the ute tray catastrophically fails, I'd guess
the main reason you might want to think about marine ply is stress grading.
Aussie made hoop pine marine ply comes with minimum stress grading of F17.
BS1088 is -not- stress graded, but must be of a rot-resistant (durable) species.
I found some F14 hoop exterior which was quite a bit cheaper than marine ply,
which I used for locker partitions, shelves & equipment door in a fire truck.
So far, so good...
How much flex / twist / etc is experienced by a ute tray ?
How thick do you reckon you need to go?

I was intending to use 12mm ply. I have read an account of a station wagon style vehicle being built with 9mm ply. Like this vehicle I will be using a metal frame covered with the ply and wood.
