    Default Caledonian Yawl

    I have a set of plans for the Caledonian Yawl (have had them a few years) and have built the frames so now to start building the boat.

    I am in Mornington Vic. Has anyone this side of the city built one? I am getting ready to start and probably need to be prodded in the right direction by someone with some experience.

    Cheers

    Endgrain

    Have you got oughtred's book? If not, thats a great start! I haven't built one, but good luck! Bring us questions and photos when you get stuck, and we'll be able to help, I'm sure!

    P.s., I'm building a plywood boat that is not too dissimilar in methods, so I may be able to help with questions anyway! I'm pretty sure there is also a builders group on yahoo!

    There are also some CY builders on the Woodenboat forum in the states. Also look for a yahoo forum using Iain Oughtred as the search.
    You probably wont have to look too far to find a blog on building one - they are very popular.
    Also google lapstrake construction. There are two books I can recommend - one by Greg Rossel ( building small boats ) and the other by Brooks/Hill ( how to build glued lapstrake wooden boats ). The latter is especially good in relation to lapstrake

    Hi Endgrain,

    great boats to build and use. I reckon we have built more of these than any other builder in Australia.

    Best resource on the net is

    The Caledonia Yawl & Voyage of The Aegre • View forum - All about the Caledonia Yawl

    There are plenty of people there building and most common issues people come up against have been answered.

    Here's a couple of pics;

    And a link to a video we made after launching one of the boats;

    Good luck with the build and make sure you post plenty of pics here!

    regards,
