    Default Hartley Scamp.

    Hi,
I'm thinking of building a Hartley Scamp. Before ordering plans, I was wondering if there is anyone in the Brisbane area who maybe building a Hartley power boat? I'd like to get an idea of how complex it may be. Or does anyone know of a web site showing build progress?
    Many thanks.
    John.

Two of us here are building Vixen Hartley boats, apart from the member Par, there is nobody else on the forum helping with advice on Hartley builds. Seems this forum has died helping Hartley builds.

Hi, I've been reading both your posts, very informative. The forum doesn't know what it's missing. Should I start I'll no doubt be seeking our advice.
    Thanks in anticipation.

The FaceBook group has some helpful contributors, though their expertise level and material/methods understanding is questionable at times, most mean well.

I must say Ogr006, it is quite hard building a Hartley from scratch, there is no follow-up on the designs, and they are a long way behind modern designs, you also will need to find a way to get an australian builders plate etc...

What are you wanting to build? (not boat, but what do you want to achieve, and how would you like to achieve that, eg timber, glass, composite, ali etc... are you trying to save cost, or want a new project to work on?)

As there are some great designs out there with much better plans (I'm talking massive build documents, instructional videos, stuff that just wasn't around back in Hartley's days, along with after purchase assistance)

Thanks for the reply NC Vixen. This was the exact reason for my post. I'm familiar with the stitch and glue method of boat building (not Hartley construction) and have been following the Hartley builds here and on Facebook. The Hartley Scamp appeals due to it's size and "old school" looks. As does the Hartley 16 TS, doing away with the sails etc. and converting to a small motor boat. See Aust. Amateur Boatbuilder No 84. 2014.
So what I'm looking at is a 14-16 foot half cabin timber boat that doesn't need a 4x4 to tow.
    Throw you're suggestion at me......PLEASE.
    Many thanks.
    John.

I hear these are much easier boats to build, although load and loads of glassing work, depends what you think going full timber VS composite.

Bowdidge Marine Designs / Broadwater 5.1

Theres a lot round though, getting the right thing is tough...

Spira boats looks a lot easier to do than Hartley , also they have a top notch page on FB where the boss is active and helps with advice, even on plans that are not his design.

I'd recommend Marissa, from B&B yachts (> Marissa | B&B Yacht Designs <). It's a taped seam build, but requires little power and can get up and scoot. It's a little bigger than what you're looking for, but only a couple of feet.

If looking for something that works well with a small outboard (10 HP or less), then consider Jessy (> Jessy | B&B Yacht Designs <). It's smaller than what you're looking for, but actually can scoot with very modest power. It's a very simple build, though again a taped seam.

I also have a 17' flat bottom skiff design, that can be built entirely conventionally (screws and frames, with plywood) or as a taped seam. It too can get up and scoot on a 10 HP outboard.

Thanks Jack Tas and PAR for your information. The Marissa is a great looking boat. It's available though Trail Away Boat Kits in Brisbane if anyone is interested. I'll certainly look up Spira Boats and the Jessy.
    Thanks again.

I too am interested in the little scamp. I used to sail the wonderful TS16 35 years ago, and bought a TS18 a couple of years ago. The boat was far gone, so I heavily modified and rebuilt it, only to find out that my wife wouldn't share my cruising affliction. Recently I bought a Nesscraft 16 with 90 hp at the back, under the impression my son would go fishing with me. Nope. In the end, I bought and rebuilt a TS12 with intention of sailing it by myself! My back is not too good anymore and I got concerned about being able to handle it. So I modified this boat into a power fisher! I have a 6hp at the back, and this little duck is safe, stable and quite sufficient for my need, if not just a bit too slow!!
I have read and listened, and looked at the alternative proposed in this thread, but I can't help feeling that none give that feeling of space, strength and safety I get from this boat designer (bless his soul). I also think if I straighten the keel I would get a few more knots (aka the Scamp).
I don't think it is a difficult job, and I don't see a little boat with a better small half cabin on offer anywhere? I am wrong?
Should I look at some other, more modern designs?
Could you please show me the light?
