what paint is that?
I am nearly ready to start sanding back the hull and deck of my hartley and was wondering if there is any test kit that I could use before I started to see if the paint used was lead based.
If it is lead based could I just undercoat over the top then recoat without sanding as the paint is in what appears to me to be in good condition anyway and I was only going to sand it to make a nice surface to make a better finish.
cheers Bob

Gday Bob, can't answer many of your questions, except to say you can get a lead paint test kit, bought one about 15 years ago when doing up a cot for the first born.
No idea of price or any other detail, I'd imagine we would have bought it from a paint specialist or a hardware store. I work at Bunnings & I'm pretty sure we don't keep them.

Wear a dust mask and you'll be fine sanding the paint, if it's got lead in it. Just don't eat the chips and dust, you should be good to go.
If the paint is well stick, then just scuff it up in preparation for another coat. You don't have to go back to raw wood, make is smooth and apply more paint.

I got a lead paint testing kit from the big green shed that rhymes with "UNNINGS'" to test my runabout's paint. A glass tube arrangement that you crushed and then wiped the wet wick end over the paint - if it turned red there was lead - if it really turned red there was a lot of lead ! Cost about $30 for a couple of tubes from the paint area - but I had to ask to find where they were hiding.

Lead in paint IS a real problem if there are kids around who might play in the dust on the shed floor or munch on a paint chip.
It is a potent cause of impaired intellectual development (ie growing up wanting a plastic boat, etc)
It should be no problem if encapsulated under fresh paint though.
