    Default Paulonia Experiment

Thought I might share this with you. Its 4.3 m long 1.9m beam my own design, Designed it using Freeship software. Strips are paulonia 8mm thick and intend 280gsm glass inside and out with 2 layers to the water line. Transom is 40mm thick made up of 5 x 8mm laminations layed at right angles to each other. Hull will be strenghtened with glassed in floors at 300mm centres. I have a joinery factory so DXF's were generated from freeship and the frames cut on the CNC router. I intend a bright finish on the out side so it is stapleless. Power will be 30hp.

    Regards

    Lewy

Wow, I'm impressed by the amount of edge set you've achieved on the strips near the keel. Was it difficult getting them to bend in without distorting? How did the Paulownia handle the bending - did you have many strips break?

She looks great Lewy. What's the propulsion to be? Presumably the 40mm thick transom is to hang an outboard??
    Cheers,

I intend a 30 horse outboard and the paulonia went well. I finger jointed the splices, The timber was in 2.4m lengths and was 75 x 50 so I ripped it to 75 x 25 the finger jointed it at 60 degrees before gang sawing them into strips on the spindle and then bead and coving them. They finished up at 20 x 8 so that allowed easy compound bending.

Yes, not sure about the inside though. It looks ok when I crawl under it but there are a few glue runs to get rid of. I used Tite Bond III which has brown stain to it.

    Default Update

OK, I waited till my brother arrived from NZ to do the Glass on the top sides, he is Prodction Engineer for a contract fibreglass Co, and into Vaccum invusion in a big way so a glass skin on a wooden hull was a walkin the park. I still have a second layer to do below the waterline. The one big thing I learn't was the use of peel ply, well worth the $4.00 something a metre. No more filling weave or bloom. For those that have been discussing scarf joints I have included a pic of mine which I ran on a spindle moulder at 60 degrees and didn't break any. But thatwas just because I could one easy way the cut a scarf is to hold the two pieces together and cut at the desired angle with a tenon saw it doesn't matter hoe squre you cut both pieces will beth same.

    Gday Lewy

Just wondering, do you have guestimate on weight pre glassing the hull? Or even what you expect the finishing weight to be?

The Paulownia, I think you said you started with 75 x 50, any idea on a price per metre at that size?

    Just doing some homework

The boat looks fantastic, very well done, congrats

    Default Hull Weight

    Matt,
Not sure of the bare weight before glass but I will weigh it when I pull it off the mould, I,m hoping to have the bare hull weigh under 100kg when glass and floor is complete. I got the Paulonia for 800 a cube but I have seen it for as much as 1800. I have a mate with and interest in a plantation and he is cutting some shortly. Don't know about price though, he would be able to supply it beaded and coved if you are interested.

    Regards

    Lewy
