If you aren't 100% sure of where the cockpit edges will be, maybe put some cedar highlights inside the cockpit & avoid highlighting something which may change afterwards?
    Or...
start from the centre of the cockpit, strip outwards, eventually framing the cockpit with cedar?
whatever you do, it will a million dollars compared with mass-produced plastic...

Had a few problems with bow and stern so achieved very little for a few weeks. Have that mostly solved (although not commplete) and started filling the fore and aft deck areas with wider cedar strips.

This is the block I glued onto the stern in place of having the strips run all the way. They just would not twist and bend well enough to go right to the end.

This is where the deck stripping is up to now.

Slow progress over the past month - had trouble fitting all the infill strips and trident tine infills. Glassed the deck this afternoon and there are some imperfections but the overall effect seems OK. Just needs a few fill coats then I can start on smoothing the interior.

Glassed the hull interior last weekend.

Been smoothing the underside of the deck this week.

Won't be any progress for a couple of weeks now due to w*#k .

On the bright side I weighed it before glassing the hull interior and at 8kg that leaves 7kg to play with to come in under 15kg. It's going to be close.

Work is a real pain in the butt, except for the money, career, benefits package and retirement plan stuff . . .

Yeah, you gotta really want a strip planked boat, for the tedious effort it requires to build them. Nice work . . .

Not much has been done over the last few months due to being away a lot for work. However, after a gentle prod I've had a look at where I left off and realized there is a little bit of progress to post.

While I was travelling for nearly 3 weeks I left the hull and deck strapped together. The deck had only been glassed on the outside so the timber could still dry out from the inside. It dried and contracted enough to split along the flat section of the rear deck. The repair was to insert as much glue as could be forced into the splits and clamp it up until dry. Then it was a case of wetting the timber repeatedly to make it swell until the shear moved out enough to match the hull. With a narrow window of opportunity and relatively mild, stable weather I hurriedly glassed the interior. The rush made it a less than ideal result and I'm glad this surface will not be seen on the finished craft.

Here's the interior glassed with bits of blue tape marking areas to repair due to being resin starved or having bubbles. Repair was to cut out the glass in these areas and apply an oversize patch.

Decided to use ply to create a template for the hatch sides - still undecided whether to use ply or cedar to make these parts. Ply is potentially less work and won't be seen unless looking inside the hatch so would be a saving of cedar for exposed parts. On the other hand the cedar could be more rigid due to extra thickness.

The current problem to solve is making the side walls fit. I marked out and cut 1 based on vertical offsets from the forms and found the fit is not as good as hoped. This is at least partly due to distortion of the hull and the shape will change when the 2 halves are joined so I really need to check the panels in position when the deck and hull are strapped together. Some thinking to be done.

A long time between posts - progress is slow but there has been some.

I decided to use plywood for the interior tunnel leading from the hatch to the bow. Did a mock up with the hull and deck taped together and while there are gaps I think they can be bridged/filled.
    Tunnel mock up (900x600).JPG

The deck and hull were still not a good match due to distortion while I was away so I glued some cleats onto the deck to hold the edges in place while glueing them together.
    Alignment cleats [800x600].JPG

Glued the bow and stern heavily and a bit down the sides. Needed a lot of persuasion to sit together.

    Stern clamped [800x600].JPG

This is it taped together all over with clear packing tape and ready for taping the inside of the seams. It was hard making the glass tape unroll right along the seam but it all worked out in the end.
set up for inside taping [800x600].JPG

It was a pain getting the temporary alignment cleats off the deck - I glued them on too well - but the surface has come up OK and there is still wet sanding to do before varnishing.

Took it outside to turn it around and shot a few photos while it was out.

Currently working on installing the interior tunnel walls. It's a bit cramped and all the manipulation/wetting out is done with tools/brushes mounted on long wobbly sticks.

Well, there's another 3 months slipped by........where's all that time going?

Still making haste slowly but there's a bit of progress. Currently have parts made for the hatch section, seat supports, seat panel and back wall of the cockpit. Only the side walls of the hatch have been glued in so far. Have also installed the rear hatch and rod holders.

    P1080903 [640x480].JPG P1080881 [640x480].JPG

Had a test fit for leg/foot room as well as clearance to the sounder. Planning to mount the sounder just a bit further forward by cutting the end of the hatch down at an angle.

The hatch rear wall modification is done, cockpit rear wall glued in, 4 seat supports glued in, hatch rim done, footwell ends done, I decided to put inspection hatches in the footwell end walls and could not find any small enough to fit so had to cut the sides off the standard 100mm ports. Should look quite neat when the cockpit sidewalls are in.

Hatch rim sitting in place but not fixed.

    Hatch rim glued on.

Still have filling to do under seat supports then footwells and sidewalls.

This how it looked at the beginning of the year.

    P1090040 [480x360].JPG

Since October the floor was glued in, hatch lid made, sidewalls made and side scuppers constructed. Next step is to glue in the side walls.

Hatch lid has magnets to hold it in place in calm conditions but will need a strap for the surf zone.

Drain holes fo rthe footwells are in the side rather than through the bottom.

Installed the side walls a few weeks back and then glassed all seams in and around the cockpit.

    P1090105.jpg

Made and installed a backrest, also made a seat pad that is velcroed to the cockpit floor.
    P1090126 [640 x 480].JPG

Yesterday it underwent the on water test. Stability seems good, tracking is possibly a bit dodgy, height of the side scuppers is good and the layout of everything seems to work well. Weight is a bit more than I'd like but what was realistically expected considering that the hatch tunnel goes right to the bow. Will probably need to resort to some kind of trolly or similar for transport to the water.

The bow is higher than expected when on board but this is better for surf reentry and is better than having it too low.
    Loaded.JPGEmpty.JPG

Just need to finish up with sanding/varnish, hatch seal and a few other minor items then it can go on the sea.
