paulownia suppliers
I saw some sea kayakers recently and one had a beautiful timber craft made by using strips of timber that were glassed together. I have made some inquiries and would like to build something similar myself using paulownia, if the cost is not unreasonable. I have had difficulty finding a supplier of Paulownia within 200 klms of the Gold Coast. I thought Form members may be able to help with some names.

Paulownia timber
I have a small plantation of Paulownia and mill my own timber. I live near Murwillumbah so are within the area you specified. I recently supplied a bundle of timber to a guy in Melbourne to build a strip canoe for a little over $300.00 excluding freight. He e-mailed me that he was very happy with the timber.
If you want to know more about me visit my web site (use your browser) at www.paulownia-timber-salesa.com.au. There are contact details and a price list. I can also mill specifically to your needs as long as you are prepared to wait a month or so for the timber to dry.

Does anyone grow Paulownia in Victoria ? Seems hard to find down south. Much of it seems to be imported from QLD.

Paulownia Suppliers
As a retired supplier I only know of one grower who persevered with his plantation to the point of actually purchasing a saw mill and producing Paulownia plank on a commercial basis. All the large plantations that had public investment that I knew about went into liquidation before they produced tress that were sufficiently large to mill.
There may be other small operations like mine but I don't know of any and haven't found any on Google.
As I have posted on the forum my business has now been taken over by a guy in Burleigh Heads QLD sourcing his timber from the same supplier that I did.

There's an old saying that relates to timber. It goes something like this, the quicker it grows the quicker it goes. If you want quality timber then you hunt for a timber like Tassie pines, if you're willing to settle for less then use hoop pine or pawlonia.

quality timber
Don't be 'rude' Huon. The saying is true when it is applied to water craft. (kayaks) Paulownia is used in kayaks and all types of boat building because it is light in weight and therefore requires less energy to get it through the water. Dense pines would be double the weight of Paulownia so this is good reason for using Paulownia if the craft is designed for construction using light weight timber.
I won't get into a debate on this issue, just wanted to make the point that light weight timber should not be deemed poor quality timber.

No offence intended, nor did I say that pawlonia or hoop pine was poor timber.

If you are intending to build a strip built kayak, then selecting Paulownia is not settling for a lesser timber. It has advantages over the Tassie pines.
Mind you, when I was in Tassie a few years ago, I made the effort to buy some King Billy Pine which I believe was perfect for the shafts of a couple of wooden kayak paddles that I made.
