New Project
Hi All
Just chasing a little advice. I have recently bought a Hartley TS21 that has been sitting in a blokes backyard for the last 3 years. It hull is still really solid with no signs of soft spots. Having said that the cabin area is not so flash. All the paint has pealed off and some of the ply seems to be separating. I do alot of woodwork but i have never played with a boat before (i ussually buy shiny ones). According to the bloke that sold it to me it was buit by a boat builder in Redcliffe Qld around 1975. Due to the local history of this vessel i want to bring it back to its former glory properly. The biggest question i have is what is the best paint to use. I have asked alot of the old blokes around here and the most common response is to just use a heavy oil based paint, is this correct? Also when replacing the ply do i just use regular marine ply or is there something special i dont know about? Anything else you guys think i may need to know would be appreciated, it seemed a less overwhelming project before it was in the backyard.
Thanx for ur time
Mark

Howdy, There is quite a bit about boat repair here
FAQ - Boat Building and Repair Methods - Plywood Epoxy Fibreglass Cedar Strip - Michael Storer Wooden Boat Plans
It catalogues and comments on general methods and also has links to some of the discussion that has happened on this forum to do with repair.
If you fish around here you will find more discussion threads too about similar repair jobs. And there will be more advice forthcoming too.
If you can post some general photos and some detail photos of problem areas it is a great help.
Best wishes
Michael

Plan A
Cheers for the response Boatmik, i have read through alot of that stuff and have formulated plan A. If my understanding of what i have read is correct i plan on putting 2 coats of either Bote Cote or West on everything above the water line (inside cabin as well) and 3 coats below. I want to be sure that this boat wont rot. Is this plan viable? Also i was wondering if the sugar trick for the non slip finish would work with the epoxies?

I'd use exterior grade ply rather than marine ply - it's cheaper and is going to be painted anyway. If you only see one side of the ply, then you only need a grade with one good face - marine ply has both faces "A" grade.
As to paint, I enjoyed the following link about boat painting.
How To Paint A Wooden Boat
I've got a ?Hartley 18' which I'm doing up, and am planning to use weathershield on the top, and oil based enamel on the hull, partly because we already have some left over paint from our weatherboard house!
Have fun.

Hi Mark, The epoxy does have to be covered with paint or varnish. I would usually stick to paint in a boat of your size just because it is way less maintenance.
The epoxy is great in terms of waterproofness but it does break down from UV light. So paint or a spar varnish (it has UV filters) protects the epoxy.
