Default Prospective TAFE course in Sydney

TAFE at Meadowbank, with good access by rail, bus or ferry is presently offering a Certificate 2 course tailored to the need of the rowing community who are very short of the skills to maintain their rowing shells.

They are open to running a course tailored to dinghy repair, if we can get sufficient takers. Speculatively, such a course could run for about 10 week, price < $1000. Programme would probably be 3.5 hours, one evening per week. This is shorter than the Cert 2 course. Content to be decided further down the track.

Please PM me if you are interested.

Dependant on the content I would consider it.

Default We need to define the content

Schmik, Meadowbank TAFE is fully equipped to do this course. They have glass shops, a professional quality spray booth and full woodworking facilities. As a non-certificate course, we would have input into the content.

Across the season, I see boats holed in collisions, gashed on beaches and mangled foils. The ability to repair such damage oneself can save a lot of time and money. What suggestions would you add to that list?

I have no idea what else to add.
Half the problems i face are finding materials in the local area... the other half are self cause because i didn't do things correctly the first time

Painting, glassing and woodwork pretty much covers everything!

I guess passing some knowledge on how to DIY using DIY tools would be great. e.g. how to spray in a pro both vs how to actually do it in your shed with DIY tools.

Mike, TAFE boatbuilding does courses preparing apprentices to work safely in every situation - upside down repairing a fitting in a hull. Not just shed work!

Most jobs that do go wrong, go wrong at the very beginning or in the finishing. TAFE training is a great help in these areas and builds confidence to tackle each job. Even for professionals, few jobs on boats are just repeats. Each job is unique.

They will have a focus on safety. For example, if you get catalyst (MEKP) in your eye, you have only seconds to wash it out before lasting damage occurs. Learning to work safely and economically is " worth the price of addmission."
