    Default Another Putt Putt project

    Here we go again.
I picked up this 15ft carvel from Melbourne on the weekend.

I have taken out the Simplex engine, stripped off all fittings and removed the timber lining.
    2228 comp.jpg3618 comp.jpg
The planks and deck seem quite sound. The sister ribs are good except starting to threaten cracking on the sharpest bends aft.
The keel needs some work but I'll know more when she is turned over.

The plan is for a boat that I can leave on a mooring for long periods during the warmer months.
My immediate thought is to route the seams, epoxy in splines and epoxy glass the hull. With the strength this will add and to tidy up a bit, maybe I can then remove the sister ribs.

Hull and deck will be painted and maybe varnished thwarts and engine box. With a good canvas cover the UV shouldn't cause too much strife.

Any thoughts? Particularly on the hull treatment?

    Thanks, Mark

Wish I could find one in such nice condition, note you had to travel a couple of days to get it. As your leaving it
moored I would repair any issues give it a decent full paint I wouldn't glass it but I'm no expert.

How did Yarrah go at Goolwa it was my choice a beautiful restoration?

    Hi John,
Yarrah picked up 'best putt putt' at Goolwa and 'best under 16' at Mannum 'All Steamed Up'.
We love taking her out on a warm afternoon with a few wines. In fact tomorrow is looking perfect

    Cheers, Mark

Guess I better post some stuff then.

Engine stripped, seawater drained , put back together with a few new bits and it runs beautifully. No electric start on this one but she starts easily so long as you get a good grip on the flywheel - not so easy in the boat as on the bench.

    Here is a before photo.

And I don't have an after photo, but hopefully this link is even better. https://www.dropbox.com/s/wslk4cgxft...84650.mp4?dl=0

The hull is upside down. Seams have been routed. Half the ribs removed. The keel mostly repaired. Transom repaired. All planks relieved at the bow, surfaces cleaned, epoxied and screwed back down.

The second photo shows the first seam spline in place about half way down. I'm using Qld Kauri, not dissimilar to the Celery Top Pine which the planks probably (?) are.

Next will be to spline all seams, and then I'll think about removing half of the remaining ribs. This will leave the hull with half of it's original ribbing.

    Comments and opinions welcome always.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Nice motor restoration could listen to that sound all-day, Simplex is a favourite with restorers at present starting to out number Blaxland's.

Looks like its going to be another show winner keep the photos coming.

You only bought it 2 months ago you're not mucking around.

Too far for me it would be a four or five day trip from here its a good project for someone. I do have a couple of boats
stored on bush block, one of them a Samar may make a suitable project it been on the hard many years. Without its ugly
cabin the hull as nice lines, needs minimum skeg, stem and a plank replaced.

Progress has been a little slow.
Starboard side filleted. Port side half done.

    Still not exactly racing along.
All filletted, faired and glassed with 120gsm cloth.
I didn't pursue the idea of removing more ribs. So she'll just have the number she was built with originally.

She will be there but not in the water unfortunately.

The timber work on the hull is complete and I'm in the process of painting the inside. I hope to have the deck on but we'll see how that goes. The engine should be in, just for show, so long as it fits on the bearers ok. The trailer is pretty much done so long as Mr Plod doesn't look for the rego plate.

"The Next Project" will be there again too - no doubt wondering why nothing has happened to her since the first event in 2014.

    A long time between posts.

"Olivia Grace" is pretty much complete. Just some hooks for the bow fender to source and the engine box to complete.

She is named after my grand daughter, so when she visited for a few days just after New Years it was fitting to launch her namesake. It was only a short cruise as a steady inflow reminded me that the stuffing box was missing its stuffing. But everything else went well.

This might be the last project for a while. There is a house to build.
