Default Rotten rudder post

The rudderpost on the launch is rotten - looks like rain got in there and the post has suffered. I'd like to cut it away and make a new one but am unsure which timber to use. I think it was King Billy pine as the boat came from Tasmania.
Any thoughts ideas appreciated Bob

Bob,

River gum, or flood gum are good for your application, also silver quongdong, all will serve admirably.

Thanks, any idea where I can find these timbers? In Gosford we don't have any specialist timber merchants, one timber yard actually.
Regards
Bob

If you know a back way to Windsor, you could give Trend Timbers a call to see what they have in stock.

Default Spotted gum

In case it's of interest, I was out at Trend Timbers yesterday to look for hard and strong material for my tiller.
They had just received a batch of Spotted Gum planks 25 mm thick, 200 mm wide, and various lengths up to about 3.5 m.
I got a piece just over 1 m long, dressed down to 19 mm thick, for $26 +GST.

Thanks Colin,
I found a cabinet maker up here who had some planks - not cheap. I ended up with a piece of English Oak planed down to 33mm for the princely sum of $90. The rudder goes back on the launch next week - just in time for the rain to stop.

Thanks again Bob
