I reckon theres another couple of boats in me yet. I need a fast canoe to get me up the end of Patonga Creek quickly and may build a North Bay greenland style kayak (from Chris Kulzyckis book again) - and I may even get that done before I do the oars and sliding seat. I also want to do the wherry-style - ie open hulled sliding seat rower. That is probably all though as thats me taken care of and my wife doesnt like boats and neither my wife nor I have any family for me to build boats for.

I was thinking today that I'll probably never get to do anything with real cachet like a strip-planked canoe as I just wont have the need and building a boat ties my garage/shed up completely - so I cant spend long on a build.

This boatbuilding has been fun though. I have been building furniture, boxes and tools for about 5 years now and its a pleasing thing to see a nice bit of furniture and know you did it yourself - but its a level of satisfaction well above that to actually have a boat at the end. A big boys toy you can enjoy yourself in for years to come. Its like its the greatest payoff for the most moderate amount of work. Which is more fun - a table or a boat - no contest.

pfffft! I'll have the champagne open and the caviar spread before he's finished working out how that sliding seat is supposed to work.

As for Arron's thoughts on his boating future ... HAH! Mate, you have NO idea what you've got yourself into. The only sane response is to start a total renovation of your house (it's less painful) but as we all know ... (damn, no 'evil' smilie)

Mmm. No contest but you think you can escape? So build a boat that needs a table, and have it both ways.

Default That is one sweet boat Arron, nothing at all "daggy" about it.

It's also been over 30 years since I rowed in a shell but you never forget that feeling.Have you looked at the One Ocean Kayaks site? They do Greenlanders,in both strip and S&G,including a hybrid with an S&G hull and stripped deck, could be a good compromise to consider.

-I actually have a set of their plans andthey are first rate.
    Congratulations,

    Default So you want pictures

A user named Turri requested pictures for this thread. I guess they were here before but got lost during the great image fry-up earlier this year.

Anyway, I dug some out, so here they are.

Heres the Oxford shell in the driveway of our old place (memories)

And here it is upside down

And here it is with the drop-in rowing that I made out of timber and an old rola roofrack. Carved sliding seat and footrests in oak. The oars are just mock-ups. I did carve some real oars out of laminated timbers.

And here is the 'boat wall' at our holiday home garage. I did go on to build the three boats mentioned in this post. This is them. At top is the North Bay canoe, below is the Oxford Shell, and a self-designed wherry is on the bottom.

You didn't ask for a picture of the North Bay but it is a particularly nice boat so heres a picture of it anyway.

And you didn't ask for this either, but while I'm on a roll here is the wherry

I think I used the North Bay twice, the Oxford Shell about 4 times, and the wherry twice. Surgery to arms and shoulder, plus RSI in hands and arms and general stiffness meant I never got much use out of them. I still have the North bay and the wherry (lying unused) but I gave the Oxford shell away.

    cheers
