    The cover over Carmen survived intact the wind and rain, no damage whatsoever and boat nice and dry, one thing tho' I left a small gap to air the hull, just big enough for a possum to get in, bleedin marvelous, possum poop and pee in the freshly painted hull....yuk

    P3201254.jpgnew cover is larger and has survived all the Queensland weather.
    Water tanks sterilised, pressure tested and fitted. New cabin sole made and fitted along with cabin sole flooring, then removed the lot in order to raise the ballast up to the keel for fitting, that has been a lot of fun (ha) manouvering 2100kgs of lead to line up 7 x 3/4" holes for keel bolts.

    sourcing material for the keel bolts, monel came in at $1290, ouch, 2205 duplex stainless steel came in at $436, not a hard decision to make.

    so far, had the 2205 duplex threaded, ready to put the new keel bolts in, but, the new bolts are 20mm, not 3/4", not much difference but they will not drop in. Bought a 22mm twist drill bit, had the workshop weld a 800mm rod to the end and have successfully drilled out the first of seven holes so the new bolts fit.

    Ballast went on like a dream, no drama at all, jacked it up tensioned the keel bolts and squeezed out 2 litres of glue. It's on to stay!!

    Laid 2 layers of 6oz biaxial glass over join, faired it in and 5 coats of Jotun Hibuild, alldone and onto the next task mainly glass over toe rail hull join and build forepeak lockers.

    2nd pic is the current work glassing the hull deck joint. 3rd pic is the forepeak with rope/chain locker and stbd locker/step framing in place, I have a nice piece of new guinea rosewood for trim.

    DSC02231.jpgjust about finished the forepeak, would like to attach some slats along the hull as soon as I can find some suitably priced timber (lol).

    the glassing of the veneer/deck joint is complete except for the fairing, and have now started removing the old paint from the cockpit coamings and service the winches while I'm at it.

    "so how long before you launch it?" often get asked this, standard answer is to hold up thumb and forefinger about 25mils apart, "about this long."

    Cockpit finished, layer of 100gram plainweave and Jotun high build.

    Yanmar 2gm diesel sent off to engineer for a checkup, it has only done a little over 170 hours.
    The cone needed linishing, I think that's the word, as there was some slippage because the cables weren't set right.

    The block was almost full of calcium and the head needed 2 new exhaust valves because of a serious carbon buildup, apparently I just didn't flog it hard enough.

    There was seaweed in the engine, the yard engineer that fitted it did not put a strainer in the system, the same yard that fitted SS keel bolts and no anode!!, which is why the whole rebuild got started in the first place.

    Feel like I was done over, in those days my maintenance was done by cheque, as I knew nothing, live and learn.

    Engine now in as new condition and awaiting fitment, firstly tho' to refit rudder, set up boring bar to sternpost to fit 52mm glass tube for rudder shaft. Making new cabin sole to fit in and around ribs, everything takes time. boring bar set up.jpg

    The British magazine Classic Boat July issue has the story of Tim & Pauline Carr and their yacht Curlew, it was from them I found the inspiration to sheathe Carmen. After 30 years Curlew was as good as ever and the veneering did its job well, from the U.K down the the Antarctic.
    I just want to sail around the East coast of Oz.
