Default South Australian Boat - Information Sought on History

    Hey All,

This boat came into my care not too long ago and I haven't been able to track down a lot of Information on the history of it or the possible builders.

    Some general details,
    Potentially built around 1945
    24 foot length (7.31 meters)
    9 foot beam (2.8 meters)
    Carvel planked on frames
Planking has been anecdotally identified on potentially being something similar to King Billy Pine.

When I got the boat the rear cabin had been modified to allow for some more interior room and it was located down in the Goolwa area. The most original photo I have of it shows it looking a bit run down, like this:

Carved/Written on the forward Deck Beam:

    OFF No 191188

    1/2
    3 ___ Tons Nett
    100

Interested to hear if anyone has any thoughts on the original builders or any other info they might be able to provide on past owners etc.

    Cheers all

Someone who knows more about Boats than i will probably ever learn once suggested it may have been build by Clausens boat builders down in Port Adelaide? But there are probably a few likely building candidates who were around at that time.

Well another few days has gone by and I've learned a little more, the previous owner was another Goolwa Area resident, could have been someone on Radio or TV with a last name like Broom or Brookes, but before that it was thought the boat may possibly have come over from the Lakes entrance area, so may not be an SA boat after all, stay tuned and we might get to the bottom of the history.

I'd wondered about tracking back the ownership details from the serial numbers etc for the Engine or Gear box. Given that the Engine was from the early 1950's though I doubt anyone would have transposed the paper records that may have existed back then into any sort of electronic format let alone bothered to keep records going back that far.

Some more details of the construction that may help identify the boat:

All the planks are full length planks, no butt joints anywhere, all carvel construction.
Potentially the planks are King Billy Pine
Copper sheathing nailed along the stem and keel wraps around and comes up an inch or so on either side.
has had externel keel cooling pipes for the Engine/Gearbox.
has 3 large engine bed bolts for port and 3 for starboard side engine beds. These bolts protrude past the planking and finish in a oval shaped lump of metal on the outside of the planking.

I was told that the boat was used to ferry the cast/crew out to the set of the Storm Boy movie which was filmed in 1979, it never appeared in the film. But I'd be interested to hear from anyone on the Storm Boy, I did read in the Trivia section on imdb about the Storm Boy movie, that Captain Bob Moss of the vessel "Tern" was in charge during the scenes where they were shooting the Ship Wreck. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him he may remember the above pictured boat...

Feel free to stop by this thread and just say Hello too, almost a thousand views, no replies. Let us know if you have any thoughts on what the hull looks like or similar too.

A phone call to South Australian film Corporation may provide some more info, some one there may remember it or know some one who has more info

    Thanks China,

Will try and see if I can contact someone there, hadn't thought of going through SA Film Corp.

Took some better pictures of the carving/marking on the forward bulkhead on the weekend too:

Default Thank you for the posts

There is nothing that I can provide other than my appreciation for what you're doing with this wonderful piece of history.

I have sailed trailer sailers around Goolwa in my 20's (a long time ago) so I know the area and a little of the history. What you're doing is quite something and I take my hat off to you.

All the best with your project. I will follow with interest.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the encouragement Terry, appreciate it

Mostly I'm a bit crazy for taking this on as a project but you have to do something to keep busy

So I heard back after reaching out to the Australian National Maritime Museum today and they had a breakthrough in identifying the boat.

Turns out it's all the way from Sydney, I don't like to imagine that 2500+km journey for the vessel. Imagine if they went by sea how long would that have taken, yeesh.

So the Vessel was originally and will again be named "Jenny W". She was built in 1943 in Mosman, at a little place called Joels Boatyard, by one J.Joel, as a Fishing Vessel.

So I now have some micro-fish copied records up until about 1953 when the Registry was closed.

Exciting stuff to have finally found some history and have the original builder. Now to continue searching and see if I can find some photos of the old girl in her hey day and see what the cabin arrangement looked like.

    Cheers
