Starting out
Hi all.
Have purchased the dvd's on constructing a 16 foot open launch as devised by well known ship builder,Alan Graham of Queensland. He takes you through the steps in a logical way and I cannot see any problems in doing the carpentry as I am a carpenter. Retiring next week
. I thought it logical to purchase a motor first in order to obtain propeller shaft angles ect. I have bought a second hand Blaxland Chapman 5/7 hp twin. Model TXRR/GB. It came complete and even included the owners manual. The only thing that needs doing is the replacement of the exhaust manifold as it is badly rusted and broken away at the exhaust connection. Can any of you tell me if parts can be currently purchased from Blaxland Marine Company at Bensville NSW? Have to get myself around the lofting process and am awaiting arrival of some excellant books on this subject. Just can't see the trees through the forest yet but will get there. Talking of forests I plan to build the boat in 9mm marine ply,roved and all seams bote coted. The rest of the fit-out in Sydney Blue Gum,Hoop Pine and other hardwoods. I plan to do a round circle trip to mid north coast saw mills to see what is available. Shall keep you all posted on my progress through this little exercise.

That sounds great Dan,
The Blaxland company probably has what you need. Sometimes they cost a bit. They probably have both new and second hand.
Another possibility is put an ad in a local paper and see if you can pick up another engine for a couple of hundred dollars, or just spread the into like this.
You could try speaking to Bob at the Rushcutter's ship chandlery. There is a slim chance he might know of something. Also a slim chance that Duck Flat in Adelaide might have something - though they have largely moved out of that area.

Hi Dan,
We are building something similar which will have a twin Blaxland in her - a 17 ' David Payne designed Snapper boat. We are building her in tradiitional clinker construction with full length huon pine planking on celery backbone.

Didn't know there was still huon pine still left in Tassie. Boats looking great. What dimensions did you make the ribs? How did you construct the steam box? I have the motor in my possession but it needs a new exhaust manifold.

Still a little bit of Huon left and we were fortunate to get some really nice stuff for the planking. A bit of time spent on the lining off has kept the plank widths relatively small for full length planking.

My boiler is an old stainless beer keg with a large gas ring burner underneath plus a cut down 44 gallon drum as a heat shroud. I welded a stainless elbow to the top and use 1.5" heater hose to transfer the steam into the box.
The box itself is from 2 sheets of 18mm CD ply with liquid nails and screws. If you size it right, you can get an 8' box and 2 x 4' boxes with connecting sleeves from the 2 sheets of ply. Some dowels can make good racks inside the box.
