    Default Surf Scoter "Calypso"

as some of you know i'm undergoing chemotherapy at the moment so progress on my Surf Scoter is going to be slow for the next four months

the last few days have been good for me, so i decided to make the most of it today and went down to my workshop to wrestled with two of my scarfed 24ft sheets of 1/2" ply to get them on the bench so lofting of the two bottom panels of the hull could begin, all went well and they are ready for me to attack them with my jigsaw tomorrow.

i have already made a small change to the design by adding 4" to the stern i thought whilst i'm at it i may as well round the length up to 23ft instead of 22ft 8in

that's all for now i'll try and get a few pics tomorrow but i think you all know what a few sheets of ply with pencil marks on it looks like

    Well done Honkers
Enjoy the lofting. You're going to need very long battens to spring those lines! If you've already moved the 24 ft sheet onto the bench you are already waaay ahead of the general population in productivity at this time of the year.

I certainly look forward to keeping up with your progress. This will be a lovely enough project in the best of times, but will have more than an ordinary amount of reward (and possibly challenges) as you adapt to your medical schedule. Just picture the picture of the fish that you will show us at the end of the process; and the comfort you'll have in the cabin as you bring it (them) back home. But if I catch you inside with dirty boots there will be trouble.

didn't manage to much today (guess i over did it yesterday) it took me 1 1/2 hrs to cut only one of the bottom panels with the jigsaw, it just needs a quick going over with the belt sander but i'll leave that for a few days.
after i had lofted the panels i though they don't look that big, but today after cutting the one i slid it over the other lofted panel on the bench lined up the keel line, and had a bit of a shock, it's frigin huge the realisation of just how big she'll be has just hit me

Make sure the right line remains marked. With a lot of stitch and glue boats the sizes of parts are carefully matched so you might find that adding a bit there will push another part or parts beyond the limits of the ply they come out of.

For example the cockpit floor, the side or rear deck, the side panels.

So you might find yourself going to the shop for another sheet of ply next week and another two the week after.

So leave the original size clearly marked and if it starts pushing you toward buying more ply you have a fallback position. And if it doesn't .... then you have a bit more boat.

    Best wishes
    Michael

thanks for the heads up Michael
there is very little difference to the width of the panels at the rear it's only mm's, i've aloud a little extra on the panels at the rear so when i do fit them i can plane them to a good fit.

the boat requires 56 sheets of ply to complete her, as for extra plywood needed i was a little disapointed at the amount of waste per sheet, the plan shows the layout of all the peices you get from each sheet (but it due to the shape of a lot of the parts) some sheets only half is used, so i'll have plenty spare

56 sheets of ply? My God. Glad it is a good boat with a good reputation!

Richard, you're nuts ... but you probably have to be to succeed with a build like that One thing,s for sure, after chemo, all that sanding will seem like a pleasure ... oh all right, sanding will never be a pleasure and man, will you have a lot on that boat. Am I right in assuming that you'll be ugrading from the small block of cork with a scrap of sandpaper wrapped around it? That's a loooooot of plywood, bet the supplier closed early for a celebratory sherbet at the pub after that order came in.

Have fun with the build mate ... and (refering to the Little Black Dog), if you feel the urge to cock something up, plane it off afterwards and do it again properly
