    Default Trailering a Wooden Boat

    Hello All

I have built a Shellback Dinghy, really happy with finish. I have a problem with the wooden, carpet covered, trailer skids wearing into the Boatcote Aquacote finish on the underside of hull.

The hull bottom is flat, pointy both ends, wider amidships panel that rises at bow and stern. The keel is supported on rollers and the skids come into contact with bottom panel for a short length of around 400mm midships. The boat weight, which is not much, is supported on the keel, the skids hold the boat in the upright position when tied down and travelling.

I was thinking of glueing nylon strips to hull where contact with skids are but not sure can glue nylon. Any have ideas of what can be done or what material to use to stop this wear would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Cayman

Hi Cayman...I also have centre rollers and carpeted bunks for my previous build boat trailer. These were covered in water resistant boat carpeting material that I purchased from BCF but have had no problems to date. Is there an issue with fully sinking and floating the boat off the trailer to get the boat off or is it being slid off in the dry? Same for getting her back out of the water. This can make a difference to wear and tear.

Hello Drywater The wearing is occurring when travelling as there is slight movement of hull against carpeted surface of skids due to road surface. I was wondering if others had experienced this and what was done to overcome. Another possibility would be to replace the skid contact with rollers higher up on garboard panel but not sure if roller surface would not cause same wear problem.
