volvo dripless shaft seal
We are fitting the volvo shaft seal however we are told that it must be fitted only one month or less before launchung otherwise the seal will deteriorate. Is this true and is there a way around this, we don't envisage launching until the end of the year, we wish to fit the seal now so we can put down the cockpit floor, anyone know anything about this?
thanks.

This is a pretty standard piece on many boats and just requires some basic and routine maintenance. I'm not sure who told you it has to get wet within a month, but they've obviously not regularly maintained them. After prolonged time ashore, you do typically "burp" the seal once back in the water, to remove any trapped air. If you don't do this, you'll cook the seal rubbers. Also about every 6 months of regular use, apply some grease or petroleum jelly around the lip of the seal. Does yous have a water feed? The smaller units don't the larger ones do.

this is the smaller seal, no water feed. I eventually got some information out of volvo that there would be no problems BUT turn the prop shaft half a turn every week or so, seems that over a period of time there is a risk of the seal being damaged if left too long.
thanks for your feedback

If the seal is left unattended, some corrosion can form, which is what the Volvo folks are worried about and why they have weird maintenance recommendations.
