It's not your liver that's evil. Stop setting a bad example by actually achieving things
I've worked out what's stopping me with mine ... apart from no time (I feel guilty when I'm not studying). I reckon I've freaked myself out with the steel centreboard and all the carry on making that. It's all new for me - working with steel, working with a centreboard, mounting the rotten thing then working out some way of lifting it. The plans show pulleys to the compression post but with Mik's yawl rig, I don't have a compression post any more so I'll have to work out something else. Nothing dramatic but enough to have me running scared, which is a pity because there are lots of other things I could be doing.

Thanks mate. I think I'm just shy of getting into a new area and don't really know what's needed as far as bearings and the like goes. I've got all the information here, just haven't put it all together in my head yet. You're welcome to cut the steel plate and grind a foil onto it though

Sorry Mate
This was an offer of purely instructional help, supervisory roll, make sure you get it right as YOU do the grinding and cutting

Wooooo Hooooo
fitted the sheer strakes yesterday (will post photos later) boy am i glad that bit's over.
today i'm cutting the 50mm x 190mm x 2400mm piece of English oak for the keel to shape
i would like to mention at this point NO power tools have been used yet, (except the cordless drill) all the work has been done with hand tools, and i'm really looking farward to cutting the English oak keel to shape (should only take around half an hour with the hand saw ) and it'd going to be a very hot day for this time of year and part of the world, plus i'm building in an old glass house so it'll be around 40 C
and of cause there's lot and lots of sanding to do and some more sanding building a boat is better than going to the gym.
hey Daddles have you managed any work on you Yellowtail this weekend ?

Cut steel plate & grind it to a foil shape... ???? !!!!
Just how massive is this steel plate, & what tonnage truck is required to drag
the finished boat around ???
Is it not an option to use say, 4 - 6mm steel plate as a centre template, build
a foil shape over it out of wood, & ballast it to the right weight with a blob of
lead let-in near the bottom?
cheers

as promised here's a few photos of my yellowtail so far
today i nearly gave myself a cardiac moment cutting the keel with the hand saw, i have the blisters to prove it
i have also planed the stem to shape, both are just positioned for the picys and not glued as i need to fit a 10mm x 40mm fill in piece along the inner keel first, which i hope to get done this week in the evenings, then cut the piece i cut off the keel to shape to scarf in between the stem and rear keel piece.
i'm not fitting a centre board as i will be only ever using her with an outboard so no need for it, but i'm guesing i'll have to add a bit of wieght in the bow to compensate for this
come on Daddles pull you finger out i'll soon be catching up with you

Well I'm impressed on a number of fronts, speed of build, hand tools only and a room with a view just to name a few.
Great work Phoie

Nah mate. What you have is the original plan. TAFE here negotiated a modification with David Payne and as a result, my Yellowtail's centreboard case has been narrowed to take a thin, steel plate. Mik's had a look at her and the steel plate is the only way to go. The boys at TAFE just round off the corners but Mik recommends putting some sort of foil on the sodding thing.
Progress? Let's see, this weekend, I studied from 8 - 4 on saturday, then spent the rest of the weekend with my gf, it being her birthday. Nothing will be happening with the boat until the school holidays, no time. If someone were to make a sensible offer, they can have her (seriously) and I'd build that lovely double ended rowboat of PAR's which, I think, is the boat I really should be building.
