Thats going to be one nice deck! havnt though of extending the pergola over the deck?

Yeah, I have thought about extending the pergola, but it's just too big an area.

To provide a bit of shade, I am thinking of putting up a shade sail over the open area.

Or maybe get some of those large, timber framed umbrella's.

... I will look into that once I get a feel for how the sun impacts on the decks use.

Are you planning to landscape it with potted plants or the like ? [ leading up to the front door ]
Whats the enclosure to the left of the entry ?

We will be putting a gravel path from the front gate (of the house paddock) to the deck (where the pergola starts) and some ground cover type plantings along the sloped area.

The Minister for War and Finance (and Decorating) has similar ideas to you in regards to putting potted plants along that entrance way ... which I think will look great ... of course.

The enclosure to the left is the cover for the gas bottles. Luckily the current level where the gas bottles sit, is not much below the new deck height, so I don't need to get the gas plumbing redone.

Here are some pics I took today. They show the current state of affairs.

I should be finished with the joists Saturday and be well and truly onto the decking boards by Sunday (that's the plan anyway).

Hey Vern - great progress on a deck of that size - looks great. Man there is a lot of timber in that - probably a bit rude to ask, how much do you reckon it will cost you?

I'm tired just thinking about all of the post holes Still, it'll definitely be worth it when you can sit out there of an evening with a quite beer and enjoy the view down to the water. Look forward to the next instalment.

All up I think it will come in at the $10k mark. I spent a bit of time sourcing the timber and ended up going directly to the mills (one for the cypress and one for the hardwood decking).

And yeah, I am looking forward to being able to sit on it and have a cold beer or two (or three, or ...)

Great job Vernonv, and tell the Minister for War and Finance that I reckon the potted plant idea will look great as well (but it would sort of bugger up the basketball court).

Actually, I was thinking of painting a big H on it and using it as a heli-pad . I wonder if the Minister would fork out for a helicopter and a pilots license ... probably not.

It's amazing how much larger these things appear in real life, as opposed to on paper.

We just completed one that was 100m2 for a sales center for a housing estate. All hardwood framing and spotted gum decking, that was charged at $36k inc GST so you have saved your self a lot of cash by doing the hardwork.

We did ours in about 5 working days including posts and concrete from start to finish, but we had a few guys there.
