Look what followed me home today.

Drove over town to pick up some wood for the floorboards today and popped into the cash converters to peek at an OB I'd seen on the infernal net.
Couldn't resist a nearly new nearly half price Honda 2.3HP outboard and on top of that the Wau Beech I ordered is even better than I'd hoped for.

Yep 57cc of raw power and 1 ltr per hour I'll need to find some longlife fuel.

That Motor looks just like the one I had, until it was pinched of the back of the big boat.
How ever the replacement has been pushing the inflatable around for nearly 6 years, even after 3 swims.

To prevent theft, the best thing you can do is paint the engine cover, really poorly and add a log fron a really lousy brand. Pick the absolutely worst brand that might have produced an outboard, maybe even one that didn't and affix it to the cover. You have to live with comments about your Black and Decker outboard, but you get to keep your Honda.

Time for an update, I've been pondering nibbed scarf joints to join three planks of Huon Pine for the side decks. Having not done these before a practice session was called for on some scrap then after making a full size pattern of the deck set up the joint layout.

Next cut the boards to length rough out and resaw, OK this pic shows the wrong way to clamp on a sled

Then after making a joint marker from some scrap mark the joint reset marker just a smidge over the line a cut a trench the the nib depth.

Cut the waste could have roughed out with the bandsaw but as I'm chicken I just planed then trim to the line.

After respeating the process a couple of side decks are ready for final trim.

The decks were yesterday today I had a go at the mast toggles which is another unusual feature of this design. The idea is two keepers/toggles are mounted under the breasthook against a stop and spring loaded so the mast can be pivoted up on the step slipped past the toggles into the cut out in the breasthook, very clever.

So more patterns then cut out the bits from some Ironwood beautiful wood hard and almost oily cuts like butter in the bandsaw. Then much tinkering getting the alignment correct, well I hope it is and bolted the toggle using a lag bolt and screwd the stop.

One minor problem a slight lack of attention saw me drill the screw holes in the second stop aligned with the grain and guess what yep split the darned thing so it's sitting in the shed epoxied up till next week.

Some time ago about a year in fact I was musing over a faux laid deck here well it's done. First I sprang some lines on ply pattern I decided the cover board should continue the line of the side deck and think it works OK.

I used the cover patterns to hold the planks in alignment during glue up then glued the covers in a second session.

So here is the result I am very pleased it's nice when a plan comes together, still need to paint the underside and the hull before final fitting.
