Fast Skiff 14'
For the last 12 months i have been catching sharks in the Brisbane river for a researcher from the Uni of QLD, samples are taken from these sharks and then tagged and released. I tag them for the NSW DPI & Fisheries. All my fishing is currently land based, but for bigger sharks/fish in the river, i want to have access to a boat that isnt rubber and isnt going to flip/roll like a small tinny would.
I have been looking at boats for the last few years and now i finally have some time on my hands (holidays) I am wanting to build a boat.
This is what ive been looking at making.
Boat plan details, Fast Skiff 14 (FS14), Power Boats 16' or less
Study plans:

Has anyone here ever made a similar sort of boat? and or have any suggestions about other boats out there or anything i should look into?
Cheers,
Tim

I second you having at least a look at Mark's stuff. His shapes are much more up to date than the Fast Skiff. Also some of his plans are stitch and glue which can help the budget a bit.
Another appropriate but very interesting boat is the Bolger designed Diablo. I have used a couple a couple of extended times and they are pretty phenomenal. Plans are in the book "Build the New Instant Boats" by Dynamite Payson. Stitch and glue.

Another vote for Mark-
-apart from having very nice designs and plans, his boats are ABP compliant, making registration easy.
Cheers,
Dave.

Cheers Guys,
I was having a look at the Mushulu 14, it looks nice. Both boats are pretty good, and I like certain parts of the two boats. There are a couple of things though. The front deck, how hard do you think it would be to make it similar to the Fast Skiff 14, more like a casting deck or under cover area for say putting a small battery to link up to riding lights...the second thing was that the fast skiff looks a lot sturdier underfoot, less likely to roll if near the edge.
The main use for this boat will be in rivers and protected estuary use. I’m doing a fair amount of shark fishing at the moment and this boat would be primarily used for that, I want something that is big enough but safe enough that I can be near the side and reach over, pull up a weight and not feel like the boat is going to roll.
Am I being too cautious/worried?

Check out Mark's forum-there are some new plans coming that aren't up on the site.
Also,Mark designs these boats to be safe and stable-I'd also advise you to contact him either directly or by a post on his forum-he's only too happy to answer these sorts of questions.

Tim,
I have a bateau.com GV11,the 11'x5' planing garvey, with a similar moderate "v" to the Fast Skiff 14, that I launched back in '03 & have used for fishing solo or with one mate & occasionally wife & beagle dog.
It is very stable at anchor ( you can safely stand in the stern & pee over the transom ) & you can stand & fish comfortably.
Being a garvey, the beam is maximised towards the bow so that the useable room is similar to a 14' boat like the Fast Skiff 14,or Mark Bowdidge's Mushulu 14.One advantage of the garvey bow is ease of entry if you push back off the shore.Otherwise, they both do the same job.
I had an old 10hp Merc for the first few years till it died & replaced it with a new 15hp Merc(the USA- built model) as my usual fishing mate is much heavier than my modest 80kg & the performance with this motor is brisk to say the least.10hp is heaps for normal use & the hull planes easily & is a joy to cruise at around 15kts.It will go much faster, but I find 15 pleasant as it gives you time to look around for seabirds diving on schools of taylor & generally to keep a good lookout.
Hope this helps.

G'day Tim,
We've got a new design coming out that might suit your needs and also length required. It hasn't got a name yet (still thinking)
LOA overall 15 ft
Beam Overall = 6ft 8in
Dead rise at the transom = 15 degrees
Hope this helps
You can find more info about the design and how it evolved here:

Overall, thanks fella's for your kind comments regarding our designs and support. Much appreciated
regards
Mark
