list of 320 different rowboats
I have drawn up a list of over 320 different rowboats. Each listing has length, width, boat and maker name, and a link to a website for more information. There are a couple plastic ones in there, all I can say is ignore those ones. The list is open source, please feel free to copy it, edit, add to it in any way. Please feel free to copy the source code (right click mouse, select all, copy,, then paste into notepad), and you can put the list into another website (alternatively email me via my email address on my website). I have attempted to find most of the rowboat designs out there, I have not got them all, but feel that 320 is a pretty good start.
My idea is that the list gets shared, moved around, modified, added to over time. At time of writing all 320 links work fine, though links die over time. Many worthy boats may well have been omitted, my apologies for that, all I can say is that I only know what I know. The list is the limit of my knowledge of rowboat designs in existence.
The list tends to favour the internet, it is hard to post a link to a book. Many worthy designs such as Pete Culler and Phil Bolger's boat that are found in reference books are harder to link to, though I have tried.
Additions are always welcome.
Next thing to do would be to make the list into an excel spreadsheet which would be easy to email from one person to another. When I try and do this the links get pasted across as the word link and dont carry across the website link details of the anchor tag. So to do an excel spreadsheet I would have to add the 320 links manually (maybe a job for an enthusiast... volunteers anyone?).
My personal rowboat is rough and very unrefined (13.6 x 4ft), but practical and effective and a very good rough weather boat. Its not on the list because its too unrefined, additionally there is a Clinton B Chase design that is almost identical and that is listed. (that particular boat, Caravelle, was not in existence when I built mine, so I could not use his plans.... drat)
I hope that some find the list useful, and a reasonable tool for working out what is there. I like rowing and if I was the benign dictator of australia I would make rowing compulsory. Its good exercise and good for your health. Again the list is open source, anyone is free to copy it, modify it as they see fit and put it on a different website.
The list can be seen here
