Nim's Island sailboat
Hi,
I'm new to the forum, though I've been reading a while. I've been looking around for plans for a small cruiser / camping sailboat, and recently I've watched the movie 'Nim's Island' and I just love the lines of the sailboat in that movie. It's a double ender in the Colin Archer type style but appears to have lower freeboard, and it just looks right for some reason - Anyone have any idea who designed that boat ?
I find it hard to imagine that someone came up with it just for the movie.

Hello Sayla,
Is this the boat?
It does look quite Colin Archer-y.
If so, it is heavy and deep. If it is the canoe stern that you like then there might be other ways to go that are lighter and simpler. Oughtred's double enders for example. They will have more freeboard because the boats are shallower.
Maybe his Eun Mara
Pic is stolen from the duckflat website. They are agents.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, that's the boat.
Remarkably I have found out about the boat now on the Woodenboat American forum. I believe that it's a boat called Shona designed by Walter Reeks (Australian) and built around the 1920's. Albert Strange is also a designer in that style (check out Wenda). I've certainly got some work to do and things to learn to incorporate these ideas and designs before choosing what to build.
I like Eun Mara, but I would like to explore these other designers for what I can make of it at the moment.
Cheers
Sayla

It might be Walter Reeks who I was completely unaware of - Australian Yacht design history is hard to come by.

Wenda is a Canoe yawl and a fairly small boat, particularly in comparison to the Archer north sea craft. The lines for Wenda show a double ender that will do pretty well to windward (not and easy thing for a double ender) with a reasonably unobstructed run.
This is a lap strake version going together.

Hi all
Yes, SHONA was designed by Walter Reeks, built in 1911.
WENDA is pretty bit IMO isn't the best of Strange's designs. There are a couple of good books about him, one by John Leather (rare) and the other by Jamie Clay (available from the Albert Strange Association at www.albertstrange.org), well worth a look if you can get hold of a copy of either.
