Thread: Waller 540 Tailer Sailer

Hi John, I don't know much about building boats, but I do know you have to give way to those big white and red boats on the Mersey River. Port Sorrel is great but I am sure you know about the tides. Any links to Waller 540.

try Mike Waller Yacht Design - Yacht & Boat plans, multihull, Catamaran, Monohulls then search 540. If you google waller 540 trailer sailer Robert Ditterich, you will find a great collection of photos of the build, 274 photos in total.To me it looks buildable but would still be a challenge.

Hi John, I looked at Roberts build and loved it. I am thinking about building a trailer sailer (one day), may be a tender for my retirement boat. I think the Waller would a very challengeing built, but it is well and trully on the list.

Hi John,

The 540 looks like a really nice boat. I don't think it is an overly challenging build and you would get great support from Mike and others during the build. You don't have to have all the skills when you start the build - you just have to know who to ask/where to look when you come in to something you are unsure of.

Just get the plans and have a go. It would be good to see another boat being built in Tassie.

It looks similar to the Waller 540, 400mm longer but 250 kg heavier. I think that might come from the construction, I'm not sure. I do not know a lot about boats to make much coment.
I think a known Australian design, and support is important though.

Hi AD, I think the construction suits my skill level. Can't wait to get started actually, hopefully within 2 months I can start. (couple of things to finish first) in the meantime I've I've 2 books by Greg Rossel to read. Once I start, I'll put pics here.

Hi John,

see if you can get hold of a copy of the Gougeon Brothers book on wood epoxy construction - the bible so to speak. The Tassie State library has heaps of copies.

Give me a call/email before you start and I'll let you know how we work with epoxies through winter and should be able to save you a few hours during the build.

Yeah I just stuck it up there because it is free plans, even has the DWG files. One thing that really bugs me is the lack of study plans available on the net. Plans arnt cheap, and there are sooo many to choose from. It is impossible to make a choice from a couple of 2 dimensional photos.
I have noticed that it seems the better the hull design the more detailed photos are on the website.
I like the way the dinghy plans with flat bottoms dont even have a pic of the bottom angle.
