Brass half oval
Hi guys,
Looking for a small amount of Brass Half-Oval for a rubbing strip, about 4.5m worth. Thinking 3/4" x 1/8" or something similar.
Anyone know of a decent place to go in Vic (melb area) that will sell over-the-counter without setting up a business account? I'm finding it hard to source.
Thanks all!

Hi Ian,
I ended up going to the melbourne outlet of George White and Co.
They were lovely, and well-priced, and had exactly what I wanted for sale over the counter.
Good luck!

Picked up the brass from Seven Hills, no Dramas. Now to fit it. Keeping in mind that this is brass and not bronze I am thinking about using epoxy and and brass screws (which I have) to fix it to the boat (epoxy on epoxy). Once fitted polish the brass and then coat it with a couple of coats of bote cote ( the uv stuff) to seal the whole lot off. WILL THIS WORK ?????.

Ian,
If you bed the brass strip down in epoxy it will be be very hard to remove later on if ever you wanted to. An alternative is to use Sikaflex or similar. I reckon it needs to be bedded down in something to keep water out from between the brass and timber.
If you polish up the brass surface I don't know how well Bote-Cote will bond to it. You could also varnish over it, but same applies re bonding. Why not try a small sample piece from an offcut and see what happens.
On two of my boats I have fitted a brass half round strip but left the brass in its natural state and it looks fine. After a year or two it develops a bit of patina but that just adds character to a wooden boat I think. The brass discolours a bit but it doesn't really corrode. (this on a trailer boat, whole different story on a moored boat probably)
Make sure the brass screws you use are genuine solid brass and slotted head, not those horrible Philips head things from the hardware shop. Slotted heads look a lot better but getting hard to find these days. Good online supplier I have purchased from here though. Bronze and Brass Fasteners .com.au
Cheers, Cameron.

Good advice Cameron, I was thinking along the line of once the strip was on it would never come of. I have had stainless steel rubbing strips work lose on the old Swanson I use to have even when sikaflexed on. Would I be able to use heat on the brass to remove if required (using epoxy)?
Good to hear from you Colin, you must be close to launch.
Re the brass strip, George and White web site has a good price list (which also applies to the Seven Hills mob) "Brass & Copper, Unit 9/14-16 Stanton Rd 96242355".
I had a piece of 25x 2.5 flat in my hand but was 3600mm long so put it back, I didn't ask about part lenghts.

Ah yes, of course. Heat softens epoxy nicely. You could probably cut it free by working along the length of the strip with heat gun in one hand and a scraper or something in the other. Only if you really had to though, it would still be a bit of work.
Cheers, Cameron.
