Sometimes, as in this case, you find out what you've got when you plane scarf bevels and really expose the inner laminates.
It's not too bad. Just a hard knot in a core layer right at the scarf.
Oh well, I'm learning on suitable material. It would actually be a bit of a waste to apply my 'learning experiences' to the really good stuff.

Ahh but there's the rub Colin, on the really good stuff you wouldn't have that knot, that's why it's the really good stuff. But if you are going to have a knot then having it on the scarf is probably the best place to have it as the scarf will be stronger than the parent material. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Sorta like some bloke in a movie once said ... "Lifes like a box of chocolates ......."

    Default Another purchase, different story

I think I'd better set the record straight by pointing out that I went back to Bunnings to buy some 12mm marine ply to finish the boat. I know UBeaut has to be careful of people on its forums slandering businesses out there, so I'll just say that what was available on the second visit was the complete opposite end of the quality spectrum from the stuff I purchased back in July. In fact I had to go to two stores and sort through their stacks to find a single piece that I was happy to use.

ps. maiden voyage tomorrow. Pics available thereafter.

    cheers
    Arron
