Balanced lug yard and boom attachment to mast
There seem to be at least three schools of thought about the attachment of a balanced lug rig yard and boom to the mast - I'm confused.
1. It is essential
2. It doesn't matter
3. It depends . . .
Can it all be tied together, or do we just join one camp and respectfully disagree?
Thanks
Colin

Hello Ian,
Yes, it's as ready as it will ever be and right on time. Just checked the date on my set of plans - November, 2007. Time goes fast when you don't know what you're doing.
Launch will be in the new year after the christmas rush is over. A good ramp next to a nice sandy beach would be great for the shakedown cruise. Still looking.
Here is a photo. Just looking at all the salvaged bits of rig on it now, I'm thinking that I should have named it Steptoe.

Very Nice Colin. A good place to launch could be Palm Beach at high tide, the ramp is actualy of Sandy Point Lane . If things go wrong the Palm Beach RSL is about a 5 minute walk. Google boating facilitys Pittwater Council. I could stand by with the infaltable if required.

Not sure if this thread is still current,
for a small sail I dont think the lower boom needs to be attached to the mast, sails and spars are small and can be han-handled around. For a larger boat I think attaching the lower spar on a balanced lug to the mast is good, and here is why.
When you reef you sails, or take down your sails, you want to keep the bottom spar on the centerline, you dont want it flying around, and causing all sorts of problems.
I went sailing this weekend and had that exact problem, big heavy spars etc, want to take sails down, no attachment to mast, you loosen the halyard, mast and sails come down, whats to keep them going over the side and causing hassle?

Thanks Peter.
I have taken the same view and rigged a mast-to-boom attachment like that used on the GIS or PD Racer. Can't remember where I saw it.
The yard might only behave badly if I reef down and have to let out some halyard. The GIS takes this seriously, but the sail on my Phoenix is relatively much smaller. So, I'll leave the yard for now and look forward to learning from experience - good I hope.

Balanced lug attachment
Colin,
Look at Ross Lillistone's video on how to rig the Phoenix3 on his website at
Bayside Wooden Boats Ross Lillistone
Im a little surprised you haven't already done so as I'm sure you must be aware of all the great training material he has put up on his site for free over the last ten years or so.
I have a Jim Michalak "Ladybug" rigged Ross' way & it works just fine.

Balanced lug attachment
I meant to mention that I also added the boom parrel arrangement that Ross describes in a post on his blog dated last August. This is the best addition I have made to my rig, which is almost identical to that on your Phoenix3,after trying a number of suggestions from other designers,as it allows adjustments to be made while under way.Try it.
A search of his blog will be well worth the effort.

Thanks Al,
I have seen Ross and Paul's videos on the Phoenix balanced lug rig.
However, they are not too precious about it and seem to encourage experimenting with the setup.
That spirit and some further reading are what prompted my original question.
The videos do show that the basic system works great, but there's always room for messing about.
Cheers
Colin
