If using the video method I've just used a mark at the end of the stick but i do like the notch idea.

I use an asymmetric notch, so I can see which side the stick is laying on. It just makes positioning faster. There's also no guessing, when the notch and the stick are traced, instead of using tick marks. You just float the stick inside the tracing, with uniform gaps around it. With just tick marks, you can easily skew a few milimeters one way or the other.
