Default Another Hall Table

A friend of mine recently asked if i could make her a hall table similar to one she had seen. The timber is blackwood with a lenght of 900mm and a depth of 250mm.

1. The first photo shows a leg having a mortise cut following all pieces being cut to size.
2. The next photo is of a leg fitted to a taper jig to put a taper on all four sides. This jig was built from a plan in FWW.
3. Because the blackwood grain can be, st times, all over the place I used a scraper to put a finish on the legs.
4.The next step was to cut the tenons on each of the aprons. This was done prior to the apron curve being cut. The slot for fitting the top was also made at this stage.
5. the fifth photo is of the dry clamp up.

6. The finish is wipe on poly. This was done before assembly for ease of application. Three coats given.
7. After everything was dry, time for the glue up. Fast work required, but all went to plan.
8.Next step was to fit the top. Used Vic. Ash for this.

9. The last image is the near finished item. The colour is close in this photo. The line across the back of the top is not visible when looking at the top.

10. The last coat of poly has still to go on the top only. It will be left to cure then a final coat of wax on the whole table.

Then off to a new home.

Bob, nice WIP I like the rail proportions suits the blackwood. The timber behind on last shot is that the blackwood some hefty lumps.
Cheers Mike

Nice clean lines Bob. Looks very good.
The finish has really brought out the grain in the legs.
Well done.
And well done with the tapering jig too. That's the one from FWW178 isn't it. Is it easy to use?

Well done, Bob. Beautiful work.

Are you happy with the taper jig? When cutting the last two tapers, did the jig keep the bottom secure?

Tex

Des.K., the jig is the one out of FWW178.

Tex B, so far I am happy with the way the jig performed. the last two tapers were supported fine.

There are a couple of things I am going to try though. The first is to replace the nail I am using to support the bottom of the leg. IMO the selection here is important. Some really ridgid is required that will not bend at all, and something that will not cruch down on the ply. I may replace the nail with a screw with a good point.

The other consideration is the use of saw blade. I started out with a fine kerf 80 tooth blade. Whilst it gave a smooth cut, it placed a real strain on the blade doing a rip cut through the blackwood. I changed to a CMT ripping blade which made life easier, but was the reason for using the scraper to dress the legs. I am going to also experiment with a general putpose blade. when you get to the bottom of the leg there is quite a bit of downward force on the timber which is unsupported on the last two sides.

To provide a little support I took two wast piece from the first two cuts and slipped one under the leg for the third cut, and the second piece down the side of what would have been the first cut. This takes a bit of the load off the nail support.

Overall I am happy and will use it again.
