apprentice
G'day woodworkers
This is my first attempt at posting a new thread. hope it works.
I have been following this forum for a few weeks now and and let me say that I am more than impressed with a lot of the work I have seen , if not a little jealous. I hope to be as good as you all some day. I spend a lot of time in my cave just tinkering and love woodwork. (still just a novice though) Most of my work is done darkside as I don't have the power tools but I take it as a challenge.
Any way enough of the boring stuff. I hope someone out there likes this box I made for SWMBO. Mad entirely from timber scrounged from a firewood pile. e g ,a bit of radiata , a bit of cyprus , a bit of redgum and some veneered particle board for the bottom. Oh , almost forgot , a couple of bamboo skewers for the hinge pins.
Cheers

Pretty good first post, but was it your first box?
Interesting hinges.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Very nice work fixer, the hinges give it a bit of texture - add the handcarved look and like a good original design. If you are into the handmade hinges I think Roger Gifkins has some plans on his Gifkins Jig wedsite that can be downloaded but you like you've got it covered pretty well already.

First one worth displaying . This box was a result of a few experiments.
First time I had done mitres and keys
First time i had made timber feet
First time I had made my own hinges.
Previous efforts can be posted if you like but not much to look at

Thanx Tonto
But it wasn't my first box just the first one worth I was really proud of.
Here is a couple of others that didn't work out quite as well as I had hoped.
The pyramid box was taken from another post I had seen and decided to give it a try.The butterfly I made years ago when I was bored one day.

Welcome and Congrats!!! Lovely Box, especially the hinges.
A suggestion, perhaps the feet could sit under the box a little more?
Regardless, the box is a beauty, especially with the very neat mitres, keys and a beautiful finish!!
Greenie coming your way.
Cheers

Fixer very nice work, the hinges are good but I do have to agree with Wendy about the feet. Great effort.
What is the finish, please.
Yes and welcome to the forum

That's a great box, with an interesting mix of timbers that works well.
Might just be the photo, but the top seems a little over-finished in comparison with the sides (gloss-level). But the skill in joinery and making the hinges is very evident.
Look forward to seeing more of your work.
PS: As DPB says, consider posting in the box-making area of these forums. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Nice work on the boxes (even the ones you are not so proud of), love the hand made hinges.
