Wink Arty pharty stuff with veneers and other timber stuffs

Well Ive been muckin about a bit of late with veneers an such so Ive ended up with a picture of a picture created using Ebony Maple Etore Cherry Hickory and Eucalipt... the frame of Jarrah (never made a frame before what a flamin journey that game is! ) the other is a half model I made of Jarrah backing board Tuart main hull Banksia waterline and Sheoak keel

Scusey da fingies! I muffed it

I will be putting some Jarrah shelves in the living room tomorrow so we will see how these go sittin on that instead of the Tuart/Jarrah/Sheoak coffee table I HAND crafted and I do mean HAND crafted no power tools at all (By ol king phook but that didnt half hurt! )

    Thanks fellas
The frame is 9in x 12in... the actual picture is about 7 1/2in x 9in if memory serves with the rest made up of the pale Hickory for the backing... the frame as I said was an interesting journey ... the picture went together very quickly and was easy given the timbers colors and patterns... the boat has a ripple under it and in life appears to be moving easily through the water with the storm coming overhead Ive titled it "Home before the storm"... the boat is based on the old Broome Pearl Luggars which I have a particular penchant for... although for a first ever attempt I did make a couple of mistakes by way mainly of not lining the veneers to the backing board straight and ending up with a bit of a slant at the top... and making the bottom section a bit larger than I would have liked... I thought about cutting it on the bandsaw but it fit the frame so I left it...

It was sort of made the pic and stuck that to the Hickory then stuck that to a peice of 1/2in ply and covered it with the 2 part poly stuff then I made the frame to fit the picture... ahem forgetting to cut the ruddy picture straight duuuhhh... then when that didnt quite work out the way I would have liked made up the frame finished it then cut the picture to fit the frame... inserted some blocks under the picture and above it in the back... gave the frame another layer of varnish and there you go

The half hull was a major undertaking but one I will be doing again

ooh and Im starting another this time along the lines of that paper tolle stuff sorta 3d?? seems a good idea in theory in reality the damned veneers seem to split chip break mangle and generally run amok when I try to get the 3d effect Im afer... the sails are going to be some scraps of leather they are waiting patiently already well behaved cut and nicely shaped its just the damned veneer!! ah well steady steady patience bein a vertue Ive grown to enjoy in my dotage (ha!!! 49 and the kids already reckon Im a dote!! ) Anyway a few weeks away yet

    Hey Shane,

    Good stuff!

The half model is great - are you planning on a series, similar to that done for the America's Cup yachts. Such a series make a terrific display in a study or a "blokes room"...

    Cheers!

Steve Ive actually done another 2 already... a scale one of Fame a 40ft schooner designed in 1910 and a Dark Harbour 20ft day sailer designed in 1912... both by one BB Crowninshield... (If one wanders over to the woodenboat.com forum and look up Art Reed and his "Melinda" the Dark Harbours beauty can be seen)

Ive also completed a 1/2" - 1ft model of a 50ft luggar (Trixen the one thats sittin in the WA Maritime Museum) which was in pride of place in the living room... which the kids got hold off... which meant it sunk in the creek... after surviving the flood but they loved it so no worries... this new one was the first in solid timber the others have all been with balsa which wasnt a very good choice on reflection as it was a mongel to get right without breaking popping or snapping... next will be a 1in - 1ft Half model of a 130+ year old Norwegian Koster named Elly that resides in Nova Scotia and still sails to this day!! and I will be cutting the timbers to scale on the bandsaw!

Couse actually building Elly would take some doin... Not impossible as a bloke up there has taken her lines of and Ive got a copy of them so doable... but it would take some doing thats for sure!... so Im presently building an 18ft 6in Norwegian Hardringskyte (spelling sucks eh!~? ) but essentially its a fishin boat thats been in use over there since the Viking times... the designer of this one has gone "typical Yank" and whacked a keel on her with a lump of lead something that was never done nor is it done now with these boats so Ive taken that off and made the keel run straight for 12ft then it begins those gorgeous curves up either end...

He also changed the sailplan to something he thought would be better suited to her... ahem Ive changed that to! With the help of a Yank sailmaker who has redrawn the sailplan as it should be... Ive laid the lines down onto a 20ft x 8ft wide section of ply floor that used to house my tools in the humpyhoochy but will now be my boatbuilding base... Ive also done the tiller a lovely peice of Sheoak just need to make a steam box and some moulds to shape her the way I want her... then the moulds will be cut from the lines and they will go up on the board... the keel timber has been chosen from the stack of Kapur and we can then start the actual building!!

Its a good feeling to be actually getting closer to actually building a boat after some 7 or 8 years of looking at designs!... the making of these gives me a feel for the acutal boat its a good thing to look at plans on paper but even better when you have it sitting there in 3d you can feel the shape of her

    ahem enough of my dreamin!

    Cheers!!
