An awesome weekend of end-grain
A friend of mine from Newcastle who is a blacksmith and appreciator of woodwork came down on Friday afternoon and I spent the weekend guiding him through endgrain. It was probably the most fun I've ever had. We picked out our material (a slab of tassie oak which was a 'leg' for my chessboard coffee table in a previous life, and a redgum board). We milled them down on the router sled, ripped them to a satisfactory width, glued, clamped, and milled some more before crosscutting them the next day and rejoining/gluing. I'm glad we got the serious work out of the way on the Friday and Saturday because a lot of beer and curry was enjoyed on the Saturday evening and we didn't surface until 10:30 on the Sunday to flatten the boards into their final form. Due to time constraints and a 5 hour drive home my mate got his to a point where he could take it and finish it in Newcastle - it was thicknessed down to about 35mm and given a rough sand to remove the router lines. That's where the photos of his work cut out but when he finishes it I will upload a picture of the finished product for all to see.
There's also a shot of mine there which I've been working away at today.
I shot the photos and developed them yesterday afternoon. They are pretty big and so to avoid resizing them all for the forum if you go here they are available in their entirety
Here are the progress shots of the one I did. All questions/comments/feedback are welcome, please go along and have a look if you're interested.
Cheers,
Putty

Thanks very much! I think it's going to be a stunner when it's all clean and oiled.
