    Default Bali Lamp

I made this from some old Merbau and the left over slats from a wooden Venetian blind (used for the roof shingles):

...then to simulate a foggy night (here in Brisbane) I used Photoshop:

Tony, that looks saleable! Maybe you should have been knocking up a few more instead of buggerising around in Photoshop. You've certainly given me an idea for using a heap of wooden blind slats I have. Ooh, to be retired.

You're too kind. The Balinese can do stuff like this (a lot better) standing on their heads ... without the benefit of power tools!

I'm just copying their beautiful work...

I can't let that one go without a comment .

I've been retired now for ten months. It's wonderful. I still get up early in the morning but not to go to work. I have many projects on the go and can't wait to get cracking on them! I still keep in touch with former work colleagues so my social life hasn't suffered. But I now have time to indulge some ideas that have been floating around in my head for years... If they don't work it doesn't matter as I'm not reliant on them for an income. But for anyone who's worked for a wage all their life it comes as a pleasant surprise to try new business ventures (even if that means a stall at the markets) to see if your ideas have any merit.

My latest venture is a coffee cart, run by my son (who's a uni student but works part time as a barista). It's hardly fine woodwork but was a fun build and gave me a chance to use up a lot of material taking up space in the garage:

    Coffee Cart.JPG

We live opposite a primary school and regularly have up to 80 cars parked in the street while the parents walk their children to school. They all walk past our house. We only 'opened' this week but in a brilliant example of programming we opened on a rainy day and it was a pupil free day. We didn't sell any coffees. The next day we sold two (one to a friend), and the next day five! At this rate we'll need to hire some more baristas soon .

Like I said, I'm enjoying retirement!

Here's another use for those left over Venetian blind slats:

Make the box out of anything (old chipboard in this case) then use contact adhesive to attach the slats. And if they're Western Red Cedar they last for years
