    Default Bedside Cabinets

    G'day All,

These cabinets took months to build mainly because I had to teach myself a whole lot of new techniques and methods which I'm sure will stand me in good stead later on as my fun with wood continues.

    The main timbers are:
NZ Kauri (Agathis Australis); recycled floorboards from a hospital ward built in the late 1800's and
Mellville Island bloodwood (Corymbia nesophila) secured on my last trip to Cook Town.
Internally, runners and slides used box wood and merbau.

The top slide tray has a bloodwood frame surrounding a leather insert. All of the cock beading is bloodwood.

Hope you like them as much as my wife does!!

    Cheers
    Brian

I should have mentioned that the drawers have central sliding dovetail runners. I don't know why this technique isn't used more often (?at all) but I couldn't find one so I thought I'd give it a go. Learnt how make sliding dovetails in the process!

Nice work. Did you use a jig for the sliding dovetails? If so, which one?

    Nice work indeed.
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

No, I didn't Metester - bit of trial and error. One of the reasons why everything took so long!

Very nice work. How far out does the top shelf pull? How do you keep in parallel to the floor?

If you produce work like that, you deserve to spend as much time as you like on it. Well done, you've done a fabulous job, I dream of making furniture of that standard. The wood is beautiful.

Thank you for the kind words. Nothing like peer appreciation.

ajw, the top tray can pull out as much as you like and is prevented from tilting by the 'kicker' (two brass screws) shown in one of the original images. All is has to do really is to pull out far enough to place one's morning cup of tea.

Spectacular job - well done indeed

That bloodwood looks absolutely fantastic; I'll add it to my list of timbers I'd love to try if only I can find them !

Coincidentally, I'm reading a book by Robert Ingham at the moment, and he uses a central runner in all his drawers - not dovetailed though. Looking at some of the work he produces, I'd say you're in good company

The problem you have now is that the wife will want to redecorate the rest of the room

I think the Kauri has come up really well and the overall design with contrasting timbers is nicely balanced
