How come it's called blackwood if it's not black?

Yeah, it is odd. However, the species is Acacia Melanoxylon and as I understand it, Melanoxylon means black wood. Hence we call it black wood. So why call it Melanoxylon in the first place, I have no idea.

We Australians have always called things "funny" names eg.....a fat bloke is called "Slim", a red headed fella is "Bluey", a short bloke is sometimes called "Lofty".There is a lot of this type of "labelling"of People and things in our everyday language. Its not there to "knock" the person but more of a term of endearment. Yeh, we are a queer lot

A few years ago , I had a commission to make a Blackwood deed box,when the client first saw it , ITS not BLACK had to return deposit, sold it later at a wood show. John.

I guess they meant black wood, not Blackwood.
