    Default Cabinet in Blackbutt

I've been working on this bloody thing since June last year. Almost in the home straight now...

The figure in the drawer fronts looks interesting. Looking forward to seeing it with a finish on it. When the top goes on it will make a big difference to how it looks.

    Not to mention sides

The drawer fronts are full of gum voids and veins. I'm filling them with clear casting resin so that you can see into them. Unfortunately the selected finish (shellac) is not going to do it the most justice but it should still be quite transparent.

The drawer fronts do look very interesting. I like it.

Silent, I would not use casting resin to fill the veins. Sometimes it can be a pain to deal with. For small areas, I rather use 2 part clear epoxy. What do you reckon?

    I like the cabinet.

I reckon it's too late because I've already done most of it

Actually I find it ok. I discovered that it's better to sand it than scrape because scraping can lift the edges and pull it out of shallow holes. I've tried clear Araldyte (which is an epoxy) and had the same problem, but it doesn't seem to sand as well as the resin.

I've used some to fill a knot hole that goes all the way through the side panels and once it has been sanded to 1200 grit, it is like glass.

Looks great SC, I think the shellac will give it a lovely fine look. It gives things a half naked touch, if that makes any sense what so ever. Nice to see some Blackbutt with grain, most people only use select which can be a little boring.

I like the gum veins you get in blackbutt. I've made a couple of things with it now using reject flooring and the like. I found the 'birdseye' stuff at the local timber yard in a pile of odds and ends. Cost me $10/metre. Probably no good for anything else really.

It is a bitch to work with though. The grain turns 180 degrees all over the place, almost impossible to plane. Next thing I make is going to be with something nice and straight grained

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Hopefully I'll get the side panels done and the whole carcase assembled over the weekend. Then I just have to make the top and finish the drawers and the legs.

Are you saying reject flooring cost you $10/m (seems very expensive for reject) or am I misreading it?

That particular bit wasn't reject flooring. It was 170x40mm decking that had been pulled out and put aside because it was no good for decking but might be nice for something else. They sell the decking for about $14/metre.

The comment about the reject flooring was just to say that I often like the stuff that they toss out. I've bought it in the past from Ironwood in Sydney.
