    Default Cedar Toy Box

A friend of mine wanted a toybox for his cabin on Lake Michigan. The cabin was built thirty years ago from mostly western red cedar. He had a few boards leftover and asked If I could make something with it. Well, here's what I came up with. The dovetails are hand cut. It's finished with tung oil. This was a very enjoyable project to work on.

    That's why he's called "9 fingers".

    What a great job!
It's great the way the grain comes up with the tung oil.

I don't know if Teejay is questioning the truthfulness about how you made those dovetails, Ninefingers, but I think I spot a repaired error in the lower dovetail that would be unlikely with a jig - am I right?

    Nicely done.

Very neat work and very effective. Pleasing to the eye. The dovetails look hand cut to me. Well done mate.

Good eyes, but it's not actually a repair. What you're seeing is where two boards were jointed together to make a wider panel. That's just where the tail happened to fall in the layout. It took me about 6 hours to cut all four sets of tails and pins, but it was very enjoyable. The more I handcut my dovies, the more I disgusted by the sight of my router and jig.

    Thumbs up

    9 fingers,

You’ve done a great job. I like the way you did the top too.

Why didn’t you put some wax on the dovetails? It will fill up the little gaps and they will look perfect.

    Good one.
