    Smile Cherry Veneer Coffee Table

I finally got some shed time this week! This is my first attempt at vacuum pressing and making my own panels.

The Coffee table was designed to match the other furniture in the room.

The center panel is made of Book matched Cherry veneer , the skirts, edging and legs are Tas Oak.

The whole piece was sprayed with Pre Cat laquer (30% Gloss) and then hand rubbed with EEE and given a light wax.

Excellent work. Those mitre corners are hard to get right. How did you do them ?
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    Hey Joe,

Great work on the table!! Looks wonderful!

How thick was the veneer you used? & was there any problems with the vacume pressing?
    Cheers

    Thanks for all the complements!

The mitres were cut on a tablesaw (I have a tablesaw with an 8ft slider). Then tuned with a block plane.

The veneer is quit thin, about .5mm, Vacuum pressing was very easy, I cut the joint between the veneers using a straight edge, I cut both leafs at the same time to ensure any errors would be cancelled out, then joined the two sheets with gummed veneer tape.

I glued up the veneer using a crosslinked PVA (Selleys PVA+ Exterior), it has the benifits of standard PVA but doesnt suffer from creep.

The only problems I have found with vacuum pressing is that when the veneer is larger than the substrate (even by a couple of mm) the bag can sometimes move the veneer and cause the joins to overlap. The best solution I have found is to cut the substrate larger and make the veneer the same size. Its then pretty simple to trim the panel to the final dimensions.

Default Nice table, what sort of press?

    Joe
Great work, I'm with Harry72, it matches the other furniture really well. What sort of vacuum system did you use? I wouldn't mind having a go at it my self and am tossing up between purchasing or making a vacuum press. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

Hi Snow, I tried making my own vacuum press, but kept burning out pumps . I tried about 4 old fridge pumps before I gave up.

I ended up getting a vacuum press setup from Cloud maker, they have quit a few different setups available. They have a website :

    http://www.cloudmaker.net.au/

But also give Tony a call he's very helpful on the phone and the prices were wrong on the website when I bought.

Let me know if you have any other questions snow, glad to help.
