    Default Chess Set

I thought it was time I posted something on this forum, having been readin g it with enormous pleasure and interest for some time now, with only a few submissions.
I have never inserted pictures before so I hope it will work.
This is a chess set I made, originally for a raffle prize for our club, the Barwon Valley Woodwrights Inc., but we have changed the raffle form due mainly to regulations so it won't be used for that.
Anyway, the red squares and pieces are from Red Gum,(old fence posts), and the white pieces and squares are from Lemon wood scored from tree fellers, (although there were four of them), I noticed at work on a garden near me.
The edge is Vic Ash and the box is of Ancient Douglas Fir ,edged with Red Gum.

    Default Chess set

I must apologise for forgetting to say that the knights heads were not my work. They were carved for me by another of our members who is a brilliant carver. I tried to shape them but was not satisfied with the appearance so I asked him to help me out.

My hat's off to you. I hate doing repro turning, it bores me to tears. For someone to actually persist long enough to get a full set of chessmen... WOW!

I also like the knights - the double-head design looks good. Did you turn the blanks to that profile and ask your carver friend to refine them, or did he do the pieces from scratch? They look balanced enough to have been turned.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Thanks
I turned the bases and cut out blanks for the heads, but the really beautiful shape was all his, based on a picture from Mike Darlow's book on turned chessmen.
As for the repetition, another friend asked me how I proposed to copy all the pawns, and I replied, "With difficulty!" so he offered to do them for me on his copy lathe, but I didn't like the idea of copying them by machine so I did them all by hand. I don't know if it was a good idea, but I felt that possible slight differences was evidence that they were hand turned, if you understand what I mean.

I will try to do some close-ups of the knights and include them later.

It's the difference between a unique, hand-made set and just another mass production run.

That's what makes the difference between perfect machine made products and beautiful hand made items. Give me that hand made look every time, excellent work. Congratulations to your friend who carved the knights. A work of art.
