closest thing to woodworking
Hello everybody,
As I made a crash-landing while trying to fix the ceiling fan in our livingroom, I am not in the position to do some serious woodworking for the time beiing.
The flying part was not bad but while landing I broke my right heelbone.
While recovering I tried my skills on designing/drawing in 3D.
The software I use is Sketchup 5.0. The learning curve is not as steep as other "Cad" software. Lucky me.
Since I know from previous threads that there are many Rietveld "afficionado's" , attached are some Rietveld designs.
The Red and Blue Chair I already build together with the Adirondack chair.
Using the computer and designing/drawing is for the moment the closest thing to woodworking for me right now.
Since I already am inmobile for six weeks, my skills are improving.
Cheers, John

Hi John
Much better than the sketch pad and pencil I use for new designs! I usually rough up a drawing from an idea, but a few dimensions here and there and start working on it. The end result is often an "evolution". Sometimes dimensions evolve because I don't have the heart to cut a slab in half (ie: the wine rack recently was meant to be a 20 bottle capacity not 60).
If Tom doesn't quite get my drift from my scratchy drawing, I use the nib of the pen to point again and again at the picture (at least three times for good effect). By the look on his face, I don't think this often helps.
Cheers
Dan

I fractured my right calcaneus (heel bone) about 10 years ago - fell down a cliff. I was off it for 8 weeks. Never got full movement back and it aches when I'm on my feet for a long time. There's a plate in there and I'm sure one of the screws has come loose! Still, the doc said it was one of the best repairs he'd done so I guess I'm lucky.
Happy drawing"I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

Kayu, lovely drawings. Does the software give you dimensioned pieces?

Nice big, high-quality, clear drawings of some interesting designs. Thanks for posting. Look forward to seeing more.
I tried the sketchup demo for an hour or two, but I'd need way more practice to get close to your level of skill.
Have a greenie. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Hi John,
Sory to hear about the fall. Problem with getting older is we don't mend as quick
I too am learning to use a CAD software and am now using turbocad. 2D is fine but the 3D is still very much in it's infant stages for me. I was using autocad light but found the input effort far outweighed the output gain. Turbo cad seems much better for getting worthwhile results with the least effort. IMHO anyway.
Keeps us posted on your progress.
Cheers,
Buz.
