    Default Corner Entertainment Unite

Hi guys I致e been working on a corner entertainment unite for my sons birthday special request from his girlfriend and the sucker that I am I put the chairs on hold got as far as making the jigs for them. Anyway this is what I have so far blackwood and silver wattle 1.5m long and 550mm deep. I知 going to put a hutch on, the sides of the hutch are going to be natural edged blackwood about 50mm thick and panels at the back silver wattle the silver wattle is a lot softer then I thought it would be getting a lot small chip outs when routing the panals. I知 not sure how to attach the hatch I was thinking of grub screws in the 50mm blackwood and bolting it from underneath any thoughts?

    G'day Robbiewy,

My project I'm working on is a cabinet with bookcase on top, so I suppose you'd call that a hutch. I'll be routing a 1/4" x 1/4" channel towards the rear of the cabinet top, the bottom rail of the rear carcas to the bookcase will have a male piece that will lock into this. Length will be about 1763mm, so this alone with the weight (s/gum) will provide plenty of stability without any more need for fastening.

    Might be an idea.

You could in addition if the hutch has feet extending towards the front of the cabinet, you could screw through from below, but you'd need to elongate the hole in the feet to allow for movement in the cabinet top.

Hope that makes some sort of sense. Things are always easier to draw than write.

Hi Waldo I like the idea of the channel at the rear of the cabinet but if he moves 2 or 3 times it may damage the male piece over time this is why I was thinking of putting in grub screws in the out parts of the hutch and bolting in from underneath the top of the cabinet and as you said larger holes in the cabinet top to allow for expansion. I will finish the cabinet first be for I start the hutch it will give me time think about it and I still haven't work out how to joint the rear panels to the to the two outer slabs 19mm into 50mm so they flow into each other if you follow what I mean.

One thing to note: I got things around the wrong way, the cabinet top would need a pilot hole followed by a second hole larger than the first - this then allows for expansion in the top with the screw then screwing into the hutch.

    you've corrected me

    Robbie,

I have a very old mahogany china cabinet in two parts that has been successfully moved about a dozen times without incident. The builder put an external bit of timber on the back screwed to the back of both the top and bottom. Easy to remove, easy to put back together, lines up perfectly every time we shift it. I'd recommend something like that for your corner unit.

The unit looks excellent so far. Love the blackwood/wattle combination. Great stuff.

Hi guys this has taken a while to finish but its all done Blackwood and silver wattle panels natural side blackwood on the sides. The panels I cut them at 22.5 deg glued and pulled together with pocket hole screws. Then cut 45 deg angle in the back of the natural side glued and screwed straight on. The hutch is held in place with a board screwed to the back of the cabinet and the hutch. The draw knobs are blackwood with a inlay of silver wattle finished with estapol varnish. Please give any constructive criticism what I could have done better I知 still learning any help is always welcome.

Love it. Looks great. I trust there is plenty of ventilation openings for the electronics. I have seen units split from the heat.
