Cursed Box
Thought I would never finish this one. Built the complete thing and was doing the final wax & buff with a swansdown buff mounted in the drill press. I got stupid, the box caught and got tossed across the workshop. Bugger. My better half now uses it as a craft box.
The lid was fine, so I built a new box. Then I managed to sand through the veneer on the base. Bugger again.
Glued a false bottom on it with solid timber edging, and it actually looks good. Gives it some weight too.
Came out pretty well in the end. Top & bottom veneered in burl myrtle. Edges in solid myrtle. Sides in Huon pine. Lining is removable and done with black velvet attached using spray adhesive to 3mm MDF. Hinges are 8mm brass concealed, brass chain & magnets from www.boxmakersbrassware.com.au. Finish is Rustin's Danish oil & Neil's wonderful wax.
This one now heads off as a birthday present to my better half's best friend. The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

Your patience and tolerance has been rewarded. A nice box Daryl.
Some people might have been tempted to destroy the box after the mishaps.- Wood Borer

Mate,
That is gorgeous!
Unfortunately A G/F saw this over my shoulder - and now she wants one...
I suggested varnished MDF but the response isn't printable...
So I think I'll have a go with some Cypress that's just innocently lying around...
Cheers!

WOW, very flash. the myrtle burl really sets it off. It does give a feeling of extra satisfaction when you need to persevere to achieve the end result doesn't it?
Boring signature time again!

Thanks guys
Major: The box itself is Huon pine.
Outback: More a sense of relief than a sense of satisfaction with this one. I hate deadlines - probably why I kept screwing it up
I've got another couple of boxes half done and two more coming after that, so I'll post some pics when they're done. The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

DarrylF, I have the same bike that I purchased about forty years ago. Have only replaced the wheels twice, the handle bars once, and the frame once. I see you have a box just like my bike. Great work - love the burl.
