Hi all,
Thanks heaps for the kind words and encouragement.
Andy, I bought a morticer for the job as the legs were too big for my router morticing jig. Had a little left on my crcedit card so thought bugger it a morticer would look real nice on the end of my bench
Hi Gary, yeah looks a little different from when you saw it last. Couldn't move in my shed before with the top sitting on my table saw so it is nice to get the space back. We are still deciding on the design for the chairs, think we have one almost worked out so will work out how to fabricate them. Will be a high back with slats and leather base. Should be a real test as I have never built a chair before, looking forward to it really.
Cheers,
Buz.

hi Shedhand
Greenie - see the green bar below your name .. more greenies you get the longer it gets .... you get greenies for doing something someone likes eg postingpics of your work ,,, giving good advice etc.... you give by clicking on little whitish thing at bottom of persons post - left hand side.
To see who has given you greenies click on User CP .....
Darkside - leave this to a person who is on that side... basically means doing things hard way - by hand .........

Very nice table, can't wait to see the chairs. The colours look rather spectacular in the photo.

Buzz, I echo everyone else's comments. That's a beautiful table. How wide were the Jarrah boards after re-sawing the bearers?
Jarrah is amazing timber. I've been collecting more timber than I care to admit to over the last decade. After starting to do some "serious" woodworking, I've found the Jarrah to be least effected by the elements over time. Other timbers (Marri, Sheoak, Blackbutt, Tuart) more easily rot, turn pithy, have bugs & borers, splits & warp, etc etc. But the Jarrah just seems to get better with time, even out in the weather. And that's not even getting into issues of woodworking ease and natural beauty etc. I'll shut up about Jarrah now.....

Luxury! I lie awake at night wishing I had a pile of Jarrah to make a table. We only have pine here in NZ.
Great job, lovely table. What did you use to glue the top with and how did you clamp 1500 mm wide? You must have some decent clamps! I lie awake at night wishing I had some decent clamps...Cheers from NZ

Ok, I'm going a bit far . Agreed Rimu is a lovely looking timber but if it isn't heart wood it is pretty soft (dents very easily), is fairly unstable and I have found it quite hard to find decent stuff (locally). I have used Rimu from local suppliers and vowed never again after it warped and shunk badly. The only other thing they seem to supply here is finger jointed pine! Totara is also nice if you can find it, so is Southern beech (although I haven't used this myself).
In the end, I have found it is easier to get hold of American hardwoods than good NZ timber. If someone knows a good supplier of NZ timbers I'd love to find out - knowing where to get it is probably the key. For a table though - I'd still prefer Jarrah personally.
Carving...I am wondering about having a go at carving. What sort of chisels do you recommend? I was thinking about an Ashley Iles set. I have some of their bench chisels and they are nice. Oops perhaps this should be a new thread...Cheers from NZ

Or Matai (I think thats the spelling)
Nice and hard
Maybe you should start a couple of new threads
one about carving chisels another about where to get timber in NZ
