Document Intray
I got bored with the ugly plastic intray on my desk at work, so I built a nice one for myself instead.
The sides are Juniper Cypress, the back is Celery Top Pine and the botton is jarrah-putty-stained plywood with pine edging.
Dovetailed Corners - for strength, looks and practice
Rebate for the ply bottom
a scrap of grooved pine from a T&G board
Lots of Ubeaut Hard Shellac, EEE and Trad Wax
Paperwork never looked so good!
But the best bit is that I wrote this into an ebook for Echidna
Cheers

Very nice, Wendy. I may well start making some similar things for my office.
Greenie on its way.
Cheers

Ray of sunshine struggles feebly down between the houses tall
And the fetid air and gritty of the dusty dirty city
Through the open window floating spreads its foulness over all"Cheers

Great job Ruffly! The timber looks quite nice, does it have shades of purple in it?
Is it aromatic?
BTW what kind of camera are you using? I feel that it is not doing any justice to the quality of your work, cheers.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Thanks Jeremy, Alex and Martrix
The plan is at www.ebooks.ausmade.com.au if anyone is interested.
The juniper cypress scent is pretty interesting, I think it's one that you either like or don't like, fairly strong when cutting but only when cutting/sanding.
Purple? - Absolutely, especially when freshly sawn, but the hard shellac toned it down a lot.
Photos - you are totally correct Martrix. I really do need digital camera, but I seem to continually spend any spare money on tools, timber, fittings and finishes so continue to persevere with my mobile phone... no one (in my family that is) took my big hint at xmas for a camera, not even HWMBO. I'll have to try harder
cheers

Hi Wendy,
A wee block plane might come in handy for trimming excess pin/tail lengths
Wood is so much more attractive than plastic. I might pick up on your idea - but for an 'out' box. I refuse to have an 'in' one

Ruffly, I like the tray, just a question Why that orientation for the dovetails?

Great stuff Wendy and WOW!!!! haven't those dovetails improved. Now you've shamed me into having a go at some myself.
That Juniper is interesting stuff! I planted 4 of them here some years ago and never thought about them having useable timber. They might start trembling now when they hear the chainsaw start!

I like it Wendy, & I really like that Juniper. the Dovetails look good mate, Am I the only one left on this forum yet to have a go at these? It's a confidence thing, I'll have a go oneday soon.

Hi Wendy,
Nice job. Will be a perfect way of starting up wood working conversations at work. Cheers, Joe.

Thanks Guys and Jill.
The more I look at it, the more I like it and wish I'd used White Shellac to try to keep the purple colour, but as soon as water or a finish touches it, the purple goes red.
Yeah, just quietly, I'm pretty pleased with these dovetails. I did use my block plane but obviously not enough as I didn't want any end grain tear-out - Need that sharpening lesson with Toolin'
MKB - Choice. I ran up a poll here a while ago about the dovetail orientation and the end result was put the orientation whichever way you please except for eg drawers & blind dovetails. So, I took that advice and ran with it OK - the absolute honest answer? I was showing off as that is the side people see first and I wanted to admire them every time I walk into my office
TTIT and Ticky - you gotta have go at cutting dovetails but I warn you, it can be very addictive
Thanks Joe - actually it did start a conversation that led to a likely order but I've yet to see the deposit
Cheers
